Reports
background
To reduce the previously very high cornering speeds in the east curve , where Patrick Depailler had a fatal accident during test drives during the 1980 season , a brake chicane was installed at the beginning of this long curve. Another chicane, which had already existed in the area of the first straight through the forest, was also redesigned so that the official route length was given as 6.797 kilometers from now on.
While Nigel Mansell took his place at Lotus again after the injury had finally recovered , Jochen Mass had to hand over his cockpit to Rupert Keegan after the first free practice session because he suffered from his injuries, which he had suffered two weeks earlier in the course of an accident during the French Grand Prix had prevented them from driving too much. He never competed in a Formula 1 race again.
When Theodore Racing was decided Jan Lammers by the emerging 3 Formula pilots Tommy Byrne to replace. Lammers then left Formula 1 and only returned to the 1992 Japanese Grand Prix around 10 years later . It thus holds the record for the longest period of time between two Grand Prix participations by a driver.
training
The first of the two qualifying sessions took place on Friday in dry conditions. Didier Pironi completed the fastest lap.
It was already raining during free practice on Saturday morning. Pironi drove a cloud of spray on, in which he merely the Williams FW08 of Derek Daly guessed. Behind this, however, Alain Prost in the Renault RE30B followed, not visible to Pironi . Pironi hit the stern. When the wheels of the two vehicles touched, the Ferrari 126C2 took off and flew over the Renault. After landing, the car rolled over several times and finally crashed into the boundary. Pironi was seriously injured. At the scene of the accident, Formula 1 doctor Sid Watkins initially considered a leg amputation, which ultimately did not occur. The injured was transported by helicopter to Heidelberg University Hospital . Pironi, who led the world championship standings at the time of the accident, was almost completely cured through several operations, but never returned to Formula 1. For Scuderia Ferrari this was already the second serious loss this year after the death of Gilles Villeneuve in training for the Belgian Grand Prix , which was also caused by a rear-end collision.
Prost had survived the accident unharmed, but because of the impressions he developed an aversion to racing in wet track conditions, which accompanied him throughout the rest of his career.
As it continued to rain during the second qualifying session on Saturday afternoon, none of the drivers was able to improve the lap time they achieved on Friday. 11 of the 29 pilots gave up another attempt at all. The other drivers achieved lap times of more than two minutes with average speeds below 200 km / h. Since the Ferrari team had not canceled his hospitalized driver Pironi from the race, he was the official pole setter and the first place on the grid remained empty. Alain Prost and René Arnoux had qualified for second and third place on the grid, ahead of reigning world champion Nelson Piquet and second Ferrari driver Patrick Tambay . Behind Riccardo Patrese , Michele Alboreto was the first of those drivers who did not have a turbo engine.
Niki Lauda was injured during practice and then decided not to take part in the race.
run
As suggested by most observers, it only took Nelson Piquet two laps to overtake Arnoux and Prost and take the lead. The reason for this was the strategy practiced by the Brabham team for two races , which included a pit stop halfway through the race from the start, which made the cars comparatively light at the beginning of the race due to the half-filled tank. In addition, softer tires could be used, which should be changed during the pit stop.
On lap 14, Prost had to retire due to a problem with the fuel injection. One lap earlier, Patrese was eliminated due to engine failure. In the meantime, Tambay had moved up to second place.
Piquet, leading by a clear margin, collided with Eliseo Salazar on lap 19 in the course of a lapping maneuver . Both pilots were eliminated. In front of the television cameras running, Piquet lost his temper and briefly beat Salazar before two marshals came along and defused the situation. Due to Piquet's failure, Tambay took the lead from Arnoux, John Watson , Keke Rosberg and Michele Alboreto. Jacques Laffite overtook both Alboreto and Rosberg by lap 27, but shortly afterwards damaged his car due to a driving error, which negatively affected its handling. As a result, Laffite initially fell behind and finally gave up on lap 36. One lap later, Watson also had to end the race early due to a damaged suspension.
Patrick Tambay won a Grand Prix for the first time. René Arnoux came in second ahead of Keke Rosberg, Michele Alboreto, Bruno Giacomelli and Marc Surer .
