The 1997 German Grand Prix (officially the LXII Großer Mobil 1 Preis von Deutschland ) took place on July 25th at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg in Hockenheim and was the tenth race of the 1997 Formula 1 World Championship . First place went to Gerhard Berger, ahead of Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen .
report
background
After the British Grand Prix in 1997 , the teams put in test days at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in mid-July . There was the first day Shinji Nakano achieve the fastest time on the following day was Giancarlo Fisichella beat the fastest time. On the third day, Johnny Herbert set the fastest time, and on the last day Ralf Schumacher was the fastest.
Before the race, there was only one driver change, as Gerhard Berger was able to return to the cockpit after his sinus injury and the tragic death of his father, replacing the test driver Alexander Wurz , who had previously jumped in .
Four days before the Grand Prix weekend started, the organizers of the German Grand Prix announced that they had extended the contract. The race at the Hockenheimring will therefore remain in Formula 1 until 2001. Also gave Benetton announced Giancarlo Fisichella to have committed in 1998, after Gerhard Berger announced his retirement from F1.
training
Friday training
The first free practice took place at times during a thunderstorm.
Ralf Schumacher set the fastest time with 1: 46.196 in front of his brother Michael . Williams disappointed in this session and so they ended up in 16th ( Jacques Villeneuve ) and 18th ( Heinz-Harald Frentzen ). Norberto Fontana and Pedro Diniz caused surprises, both of whom ended up only around half a second behind the first in fifth and sixth.
All drivers were placed within five seconds.
Saturday training
Ralf Schumacher was able to secure the best time again, Mika Häkkinen had to admit defeat by two thousandths.
All drivers were placed within four seconds.
Qualifying
Each driver only had twelve laps to set the fastest time.
Gerhard Berger was able to secure the best time with 1: 41.873, around two hundredths ahead of future Benetton driver Giancarlo Fisichella . It was the first pole position for the Benetton team since the 1995 Japanese Grand Prix . Michael Schumacher was able to secure fourth place, his pursuer in the world championship, Jacques Villeneuve , was only ninth, one second behind. The reason for the poor performance was that the car was around 3 km / h slower than Berger's Benetton on the long straights.
All drivers were placed within five seconds.
Warm-up
Villeneuve was first with 1: 45.006, followed by Damon Hill , Giancarlo Fisichella , his team mate Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Gerhard Berger .
All drivers were placed within six seconds.
run
The Minardi of Tarso Marques could not start because of a power loss.
Berger was able to defend his lead, but was rushed by Fisichella, who also took the lead for two laps. But when he damaged his tires with a part of Jan Magnussen's engine, he had to give up due to the overheated engine, as the parts of the broken tire collected in the radiator and the engine could no longer be adequately cooled.
Meanwhile, Villeneuve had a disastrous race as he was eliminated with twelve laps to go. When trying to overtake the newcomer Jarno Trulli , the Canadian spun and had to retire.
Berger kept the lead until the end and was able to convince himself to win the race. With this success Gerhard Berger was able to secure his tenth victory and his second Grand Slam (combination of pole position, victory and the fastest race lap). It was also Berger's twelfth pole position and his 21st fastest race lap. At the same time, however, it was his last Formula 1 victory and the last for Benetton. Curiously, Gerhard Berger was also able to win his first victory at the 1986 Mexican Grand Prix at Benetton, which was also Benetton's first victory. It is the last victory of an Austrian in Formula 1 so far.
