The Prost JS45 was the first Formula 1 - racing cars from the team Prost Grand Prix . The JS45 was designed by Loïc Bigois and used in the 1997 season . The car was powered by a Mugen Honda -MF301HA / B-V10 engine with 3 liter displacement. The tires came from the Japanese tire company Bridgestone , the fuel from Elf .
Technology and development
According to technical director Loïc Bigois , everything has changed on the car with the exception of the rear-view mirrors, and the aerodynamic work was done in Magny-Cours' own wind tunnel . Most of the changes were made to the underbody and the diffuser . The engine, a Mugen Honda MF301HA or MF301HB, was a 3.0 liter V10 naturally aspirated engine with over 529 kW (720 hp ). An independently developed sequential semi-automatic transmission with six gears was used as the transmission, the brakes come from Brembo and the fuel from Elf .
Racing history
The team Équipe Ligier existed since the 1976 season and was led by Flavio Briatore in the last year of its existence . While preparing for the Formula 1 World Championship in 1997, Alain Prost bought the French racing team and led it into the new season as team boss. Following the purchase, he signed a contract with Peugeot as an engine supplier for a period of three years. The abbreviation JS in the type designation means that the car was still completely developed under the Ligier name and Prost was not involved in it. JS are the initials of the racing driver and close friend of Guy Ligier , Jo Schlesser .
The JS45 quickly proved to be a competitive car if it held out until the end of the race. Thus achieved Olivier Panis right in the first race, two points in the next race for third place, the first podium finish for Prost . This was followed by an improvement in the best position in Spain with second place, before the main driver Panis broke both legs in an accident in the following race in Canada . In the following races Panis was replaced by the newcomer Jarno Trulli , who was employed by Minardi at the time . In 17 races, Prost was eliminated ten times due to defects. The negative highlight was the race in Austria , where Jarno Trulli retired after 37 laps in the lead with engine failure.
At the end of the season, 21 points and sixth place in the constructors' championship had been achieved, ahead of Sauber and Arrows , among others . Jordan who placed fifth was missing twelve points.
Painting and sponsorship
The car was painted in a simple blue with white accents on the rear wing and the side panels of the front wing. At the start of the new team, surprisingly, there was no lack of sponsors and Gauloises was a financially strong main sponsor. The sponsor of the cigarette brand occupied the side box, the front wing and the front of the rear wing. During races in countries with a tobacco advertising ban , however, these areas remained free. The tire supplier Bridgestone secured the rear of the rear wing and the side panels of the front wing. The French pay-TV broadcaster Canal + advertised on the nose and together with the engine supplier Mugen Honda on the airbox. The logo of the telecommunications company Alcatel was on the side air baffles, and the BIC Group was advertising directly above it . Furthermore promoted Eleven , Sun Microsystems , Catia Solutions , Volvo Trucks France , Avex Group , LVS Viaggio , Showa , Giordana , King Dragon Racing and PlayStation .
driver
The main driver was Olivier Panis and, under pressure from the engine supplier, Shinji Nakano . Panis was taken over from the previous season, Pedro Diniz moved to his newly formed team Arrows together with team owner Tom Walkinshaw .
The Frenchman Emmanuel Collard was nominated as a test driver , the contract with the nominated replacement driver from the previous year, Kelvin Burt , was not renewed. He continued to focus on his touring car career. Collard was not used for the year, even when the main driver Panis suffered a serious leg injury during the race in Canada . As a replacement, Flavio Briatore's protégé Jarno Trulli was poached by Minardi .
