The Prost AP03 was the Formula 1 racing cars of Prost Grand Prix for the 2000 season , took part in all 17 races of the season.

Technology and development

Technical management

The technical director for the development was Alan Jenkins , for the construction Jean-Paul Gousset and for the aerodynamic shape of the car Loïc Bigois .

engine

The engine was the A20-V10 naturally aspirated engine from Peugeot with a displacement of 2998 cm³ and a cylinder bank angle of 72 °. It weighed 109 kg, was 583 mm long, 544 mm wide and 376 mm high and developed 582 kW (780 hp) at 16,200 rpm in racing mode; Peugeot stated that the engine achieved 591 kW (792 hp) at 17,000 rpm in qualifying mode. Each cylinder bank has two camshafts driven by gearwheels , and each cylinder has four valves with pneumatic valve springs. The engine and the transmission had a common oil circuit. The Peugeot A20 was newly developed and was eleven kilograms lighter than the A18 from the previous year. Because it was lower, the center of gravity was lower. The engine proved to be relatively unreliable before and during the season, many test drives were hindered by engine problems and some failures were due to the engine or its peripherals. During the season, Peugeot developed three further evolutionary stages. In evolution stage four, which was primarily intended for qualifying, a performance increase of up to two percent was determined through test bench simulation; that corresponded to about ten hp.

Gearbox and chassis

View of the cockpit

Compared to the previous year there were many changes to the transmission and the chassis. The sequential semi-automatic transmission , newly developed in collaboration with Xtrac , had seven gears. Front and rear wheels were on double wishbones with internal, via pushrods confirmed springs and shock absorbers suspended. The chassis was a pressed composite monocoque made of CFRP . A 12-volt battery was used as the battery . The fuel tank was placed between the cockpit and the engine.

Suppliers

Prost sourced parts for the car from many different companies. The tires were supplied by Bridgestone , the wheels by BBS , the fuel and engine oil by Total , the engine electronics by TAG , the wheel suspension by Penske and the brakes by AP Racing .

Racing history

Creation of Prost Grand Prix

On February 13, 1997 the four-time Formula 1 world champion Alain Prost bought the racing team Équipe Ligier, which had been represented in Formula 1 since 1976, and renamed it "Prost Grand Prix" for the new 1997 season . Alain Prost made it his goal to make his racing team a purely French national team. Since the car had already been developed, the first Prost racing car kept the designation JS45 . The previously concluded contracts with, among others, Bridgestone as the tire supplier, Gauloises as the main sponsor and the driver pairing Olivier Panis and Shinji Nakano remained valid. In February of the same year, after the takeover, Alain Prost signed a contract with Peugeot for their engines for a term of three years. The first Peugeot engine was installed in the Prost AP01 in 1998 .

Loïc Bigois , who worked as head aerodynamicist at Ligier, was appointed technical director during the transition period until Bernard Dudot , Renault's technical director until the team left the team, joined the team at the end of 1997. Then Bigois was responsible for the vehicle design. From 2000, after Ben Wood left to join the new Jaguar team, he was again responsible for aerodynamics. Wood himself only joined Prost in 1998 as Tyrrell's chief aerodynamicist. In 1998 the test driver Stéphane Sarrazin and the respected Formula 1 designer John Barnard also joined as consultants for the design of the car.

Preparations for the 2000 season

Jean Alesi (here from 2019) should provide the necessary experience

Alain Prost wanted to get back to the front of the field with the AP03 and recruited Alan Jenkins , who had previously worked at Stewart Grand Prix , as the new technical director in the summer of 1999 in the run-up to the new season ; the previous technical director Bernard Dudot stayed with Prost. John Barnard's company B3 Technologies again supported Prost as a technical consultant. In August 1999 it was announced that Jean Alesi had been hired as the new number one driver; his colleague became Formula 1 newcomer Nick Heidfeld , Formula 3000 champion from 1999 . Alain Prost described the driver pairing as "the perfect mix of experience and youth" . In January 2000, John Walton joined Prost as sports director; Walton was previously employed by the Formula 1 teams Toleman , Benetton, Jordan and Arrows.

Before the start of the season, the sponsors Canal + and Alcatel left the racing team, which was compensated for with Yahoo as a new sponsor. It was a three-year contract with an amount of 25 million US dollars completed.

Presentation and winter test drives

The car was first used on private test drives on January 27, 2000 at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours . On February 1st at eleven o'clock, Prost presented the new racing car to 300 guests and journalists at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya . The new sponsor Yahoo broadcast the publication as a live stream on the Prost Grand Prix homepage. Alan Jenkins claimed at the presentation that the new car was "more than an evolution of the previous year's model" . Critics complained that the AP03 was too similar to the previous year's model AP02 . Jenkins countered this statement by saying that it was the third year in a row without changes to the technical regulations and that all cars would automatically start to look alike. The next day the team started the vehicle test phase.

In the winter tests, the Prost AP03 showed many problems. Heidfeld complained about the poor reliability of the car. On February 2nd, the vehicles turned several laps on the circuit in Barcelona alongside Benetton ; Alesi achieved a best time of 1: 26.99 minutes, around three and a half seconds slower than Alexander Wurz in the Benetton B200 . After six laps there were problems with the rear suspension and Prost had to leave the Barcelona tests prematurely. The team returned to Barcelona with Heidfeld on February 9th. Heidfeld achieved his fastest personal lap with 1: 24.66 minutes; around four seconds slower than Jos Verstappen ( Arrows ) and three seconds slower than Heinz-Harald Frentzen ( Jordan ). Up to February 22nd, 16 different drivers tested their cars in Barcelona, Prost also planned to stay until the end, but had to leave two days early due to a gearbox defect. Heidfeld was 14th with 1: 22.993 minutes and Alesi was the slowest driver with 1: 24.882 minutes; Even the Formula 1 paydriver Gastón Mazzacane in the Minardi M02 was one second faster than the experienced French in the penultimate place. At the end of February, the racing team put in additional test days in Jerez de la Frontera in addition to BAR , Benetton, Jaguar , McLaren and Williams . Alesi was also in last place here, his fastest lap time of 1: 26.989 minutes was around three and a half seconds behind the lap time of Eddie Irvine , the fastest driver. Heidfeld's personal best was 1: 24.399 minutes. In the three days in the south of Spain, the cars covered a total of 162 laps, the team found the cause of some electronic problems and solved them. On February 29th, Prost took a two-day test drive at Silverstone . For the first day trips with Heidfeld were planned, but due to engine problems the car did not cover a lap. On the last day Heidfeld did 32 laps, his fastest time was 1: 29.045 minutes; Jenson Button (Williams) achieved the fastest lap time that day with 1: 26.380 minutes.

Alain Prost was very dissatisfied with the new Peugeot engine because it continued to be weak and unreliable and, according to his account, promises were not fulfilled. Peugeot countered Prost's statements by releasing engine telemetry data , which showed the A20 engine achieved 591 kW (792 hp) at 17,000 rpm; In comparison, the Mercedes FO110J engine used by McLaren achieved 600 kW (815 hp) at 17,400 rpm. But Peugeot's chief engineer Jean-Pierre Boudy admitted that an undetected leak, a so-called blowby , between the combustion chamber and in the lower crankcase caused the poor reliability. The relationship between the French engine manufacturer and Prost deteriorated increasingly during the season, at the end of the season Peugeot withdrew from Formula 1 and sold the engines to Asiatech .

The course of the season

Bumpy start

The season started unsatisfactorily, at the first race weekend in Australia Heidfeld suffered from braking problems and Alesi had to start the race from the pit lane with the replacement car because the electronics went on strike during the warm-up. To make matters worse, the vehicle setup of the replacement car was tailored to Heidfeld's settings. The only bright spot was the 15th place on the grid for Heidfeld after qualifying; he left Jenson Button and Pedro Diniz behind, among others. However, Heidfeld got off to a bad start and collided with Gené on the first lap; the following pit stop threw Heidfeld far back. Alesi himself caught up with the field first, but when he failed to overtake Diniz in turn three, he spun and fell back to the bottom of the field. On lap 27 Alesi retired due to a hydraulic leak and Heidfeld was ninth and last two laps behind.

Immediately after the first race, Prost flew with Jean Alesi to Silverstone for two test days to test various car components. Alesi did 80 laps on the first day, his fastest lap time was 1: 26.673 minutes. According to John Walton, “there was still a lot of work to be done, especially with the electronics, to increase reliability” . The last day could not be used as desired due to electronic problems.

Strengthened by the test days, the team confidently traveled to Brazil . On Friday, Alesi drove 39 laps and achieved the sixth fastest time of 1: 17.468 minutes, which is only slower than the Ferraris, McLarens and de la Rosa. Heidfeld, who drove on this track for the first time, started with the replacement car and had to change the engine after seven laps. Then he drove three more laps until the transmission went on strike. The next day in the second training session, Prost finished in 16th and 19th place. Alesi's engine was swapped for qualifying and Heidfeld had to use the reserve car again due to clutch problems. Alesi reached 15th place with 1: 15.715 minutes and missed Jos Verstappen's 14th place by eleven hundredths; Heidfeld was in 19th place. During the meeting, several loose advertising boards caused interruptions; during the last interruption, such a board at the end of the start-finish straight came loose and hit Alesi's car; but there was no significant damage. During the warm-up, Alesis tore the rear wing off the car, but the car was made ready for use again in good time before the start. The start of the race went well for Alesi, he consistently made up positions until he had to retire on lap eleven, in ninth position, with an electronic fault. Heidfeld, who had worked his way up to 17th place despite a planned one-stop strategy and thus a very heavy car, was eliminated for two laps due to an engine failure.

After the next disappointing race, the team again traveled to Silverstone for two days, where those responsible tried again to fix the reliability problems. On day one, Alesi drove 34 laps without interference, his fastest lap time was 1: 28.931 minutes. The next day, an evolutionary stage of the A20 engine was used, but only limited tests were possible due to a water leak and recurring electronics problems. Alesi was still able to do 34 laps with a best time of 1: 28.062 minutes. According to John Walton, despite the two days of testing, the engineers did not gain any new knowledge about the reasons for the frequent electronic defects. At the same time, a new car with chassis number four was completed at the headquarters in Guyancourt and shipped to Spain, where Heidfeld also took test drives at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya .

On the Thursday before the first official session in Imola , Alain Prost announced that the team was in talks with Mercedes and Renault about a possible delivery of engines for the 2001 season. On Friday, both drivers turned 25 laps with fully filled tanks and finished 14th with Alesi and 18th with Heidfeld. Heidfeld missed the morning session due to oil pressure problems and Alesi spun several times during the day. On the second day of training, the team's positions deteriorated: Alesi reached 16th place with 1: 27.195 minutes and Heidfeld 19th place with 1: 27.464 minutes; only the Minardis with Gené and Mazzacane performed worse. In qualifying, Jean Alesi reached 15th place, just under two seconds behind the time of pole position. On race day Heidfeld, who had qualified last anyway, had to start with the replacement car because his actual car did not start. In the race, Alesi worked his way up to 13th place, until a pit stop on lap 20 threw him back to 16th place. A hydraulic defect on lap 22 and 25 respectively ended the race early for Heidfeld and Alesi. That was the second double retirement this season; Of six possible finishings, the drivers had only reached the end of the race once.

In the run-up to the 2000 British Grand Prix , the team flew to Silverstone again for three days, but only 30 laps were completed due to engine problems. During these test days, new electronics and chassis components were to be tested and the problems of the car resolved, but according to Walton, the trips ended with no results.

Before the race weekend, Alesi set the goal of just wanting to finish the race. The first training session ended with Alesi and Heidfeld in positions 17 and 18, both drivers were very disappointed with the engine performance. On Saturday Heidfeld was in twelfth place, two seconds behind Häkkinen's fastest time; Despite changing the engine, Alesi was 16th. During qualifying, Heidfeld returned with the replacement car and only drove two laps, as an engine failure ended the session prematurely for him. This was enough for 17th place while Alesi got 15th place with 1: 27.559. On Sunday Alesi started the race well and was 13th after the first lap, while Heidfeld dropped to 20th place and stayed at the bottom of the field until he retired; on lap 51 the engine failed. Alesi moved up a few places due to the failures of other drivers and finished tenth in the final standings, one lap behind, followed by Diniz, the two Jaguars and the Minardis.

Possible Peugeot exit for 2001?

After the fourth race, the first rumors arose about a possible sale of Peugeot's engines after this season to other manufacturers such as Supertec and Fondmetal and the associated withdrawal from Formula 1. Later in May there were rumors of a possible sale to Toyota , which was preparing for the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship at the time .

Breakthrough in reliability

One week before the race weekend in Spain , the team carried out intensive test drives with a focus on reliability on the Barcelona circuit. Alesi 650 and Heidfeld covered even 1000 kilometers in four days. After most of the errors had been found, Prost tried out new aerodynamic parts for the front wing and a modified underbody.

Motivated by informative test days, Prost started the first training session and achieved tenth place with Alesi, leaving the Benettons, Jaguar, BAR and Arrows behind, among others. Heidfeld reached 18th place, about a second behind his colleague, but he suffered a leak in the fuel tank during the meeting and therefore only completed a few laps. On the second day of training Prost reached places 16 and 17, Heidfeld beat Alesi by only five thousandths. Qualifying was disappointing, both drivers were plagued by malfunctions in their cars. Jean Alesi only achieved a single timed lap, which he scored very early in qualifying as a hydraulic problem kept him in the pits until the end of the session. Nick Heidfeld only reached 20th place and also didn't improve his time because of an engine failure. Although he still started a try with the replacement car. But since Alesi's setup was canceled, he did not improve his personal best. Since Pedro de la Rosa was relegated from ninth place to the end of the field due to a non-compliant fuel, the Prost drivers started from 17th and 19th position. At the start of the race, Heidfeld lost his place to de la Rosa, who with Alesi around 17th Place struggled. Both touched at the beginning of turn seven when de la Rosa surprisingly sat down next to Alesi and retired. The second Prost car with Heidfeld did not convince during the race and finished last three laps behind.

Heidfeld at the Nürburgring excluded

Nick Heidfeld (here from 2014) was not allowed to take part in his first home race because the vehicle was too light

After the disappointment in Spain, the team and Heidfeld tested new aerodynamics and engine parts for three days on the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours race track, which is around 230 kilometers from the base . On the first day, which was his 23rd birthday, Heidfeld only drove 28 laps due to rain; his best time was 1: 20.22 minutes. On the second day, despite the storm, it was 49 laps with a fastest lap improved to 1: 19.92 minutes. On the third and final day, Heidfeld covered another 43 laps despite transmission and engine problems and achieved a lap time of 1: 19.09 minutes, more than a second faster than on the first day.

Heidfeld, for whom the European Grand Prix was the first home race in Formula 1 and who therefore used a new helmet design, achieved the ninth fastest time on Friday, just under a second slower than the front runner Jenson Button. Alesi, on the other hand, was only eighteenth, seven tenths behind his colleague. The second free practice ended with positions 14 and 15, Alesi was beaten by almost six hundredths from Heidfeld. During the subsequent qualifying, Alesi damaged his transmission and only achieved 18th place while Heidfeld achieved 13th place with 1: 19.147. But the joy only lasted for a short time, because during the weight loss it turned out that Heidfeld's car weighed 598 kilograms. Article 4.1 of the FIA's technical regulations stipulated a minimum weight of 600 kilograms and the AP03 was two kilograms too light and therefore illegal. At first Heidfeld was deprived of the best time and later he was even excluded from the race. Despite the disappointment with the decision, Prost did not appeal. Alesi started the rain race as the only representative of the team and was 14th after the first lap. He climbed to sixth place. That would have been a place in the points when he had to change tires prematurely due to the heavy onset of rain. With the rain tires, which have now become necessary, he got back into the race in 13th place. During the course of the race, Alesi had shifting problems after his second refueling stop and he had to make another pit stop. When entering the pit lane , the speed limiter was not activated; each car had a button on the steering wheel that set the maximum speed for the pit lane. Alesi received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for exceeding the speed limit and pitted a fourth time. With this penalty, the penalized driver must drive into the pit lane and park his car on his parking space for at least ten seconds. No work on the car is permitted while the driver is serving the sentence. Alesi finished the race two laps behind in ninth place and was also the last. Alesi was very disappointed after the race as this race would have been the perfect opportunity to collect world championship points for the first time this season.

Close to the points, Alan Jenkins sacked

The test driver Stéphane Sarrazin (here from 2012) only drove the Prost AP03 for the first time in June 2000

While the teams were visiting the Eifel, Mercedes announced that Prost would not receive any engines. There have been talks between Prost and Mercedes, but there is a lack of capacity to supply another racing team.

With Stéphane Sarrazin, who climbed into the AP03 for the first time, Prost returned to Silverstone for three days to continue working on the aerodynamics development program. On the first day in the rain, Sarrazin only drove twelve laps and on Wednesday 30 laps; his fastest lap was 1: 29,200 minutes. Alesi drove on the last day and set a fastest time of 1: 27.873 minutes after 43 laps.

On Thursday, June 1st, 2000, Formula 1 started its first free practice session in Monaco , with Heidfeld only finishing 21st and having an accident with his car at turn 16, the La Rascasse . After changing the setup, Heidfeld was on a new fast lap when he lost control at the beginning of the corner and slid into the guard rails. He severely damaged both wheel suspensions on the right side and tore off the front and rear wings. Alesi on the other hand finished seventh with 1: 22.708 minutes and was delighted with the result. On the second day, Alesi reached position seven again, he even improved his time by one second to 1: 21.072 minutes and was therefore only seven tenths slower than Coulthard, who was the fastest. Heidfeld also improved by two seconds and was in 20th place in the end, but he only tested to a limited extent because a marshal had touched the car after a driving error, which automatically meant the end of the session for Heidfeld. It is forbidden to accept help from outsiders and then continue the active session. In the run-up to qualifying, Alesi had the gear ratio adjusted because he expected a better lap time, but the alternator went on strike at the start of the session and he had to qualify with the replacement car. Alesi feared that all the work in the training sessions would have been in vain after the different cars sometimes behaved differently despite the same setup. But it didn't turn out that way and Alesi was seventh for the race with a best time of 1: 20.494 minutes, around one second behind Michael Schumacher's pole position . Heidfeld, on the other hand, only reached 18th place and was one and a half seconds slower than his colleague. Heidfeld was very disappointed with the events on the race weekend and blamed the reduced training opportunities for the poor performance. The race started with two interruptions: the first start was canceled due to an engine failure by Alexander Wurz and the second start due to an accident in the sixth corner, the Grand Hotel Hairpin , when Pedro de la Rosa turned and the track after a failed attempt by Button was blocked by several cars, including Heidfeld. On the third attempt, Alesi managed to overtake Barrichello in sixth after a very good start and was thus in the points. But after 29 laps the disaster came, Alesi retired in seventh place due to a drive failure. Since three drivers, Michael Schumacher, Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher, were eliminated from the top four in the later course of the race and Mika Häkkinen had difficulties with the accelerator, a possible podium position would have been possible in addition to the first points this season. Heidfeld benefited from the numerous failures and finished eighth; that was the best result for Prost this season.

After the Monaco Grand Prix , technical director Alan Jenkins was sacked because of the persistently poor results. There were already rumors in the paddock about the possible dismissal of Jenkins, which Prost initially denied. But when Jenkins was not present at the Monaco race weekend, the rumors intensified. Less than a week after the race, the team confirmed the termination of the contract. As an interim solution, the successor was the vehicle designer Jean-Paul Gousset . In addition, Ben Wood , a senior aerodynamics executive, left Prost and joined Jaguar .

To prepare for the next race in Canada, the team traveled to Monza for two days. Initially in rainy weather, Heidfeld achieved a lap time of 1: 27.700 minutes after 49 laps without incidents. Many new components and setup settings for Montreal were tested. On the second day it was Alesi's turn and finished 59 laps with a best time of 1: 27.355 minutes. In addition to the setup settings, new brakes were also tested.

The Canadian Grand Prix took place in mid-June 2000 , the first session began with a hydraulic fault in Alesi's car, which was fixed that morning. Despite poor traction, Alesi finished eleventh at the end of the day with a time of 1: 22.022 minutes. Heidfeld, who had an accident in the morning and damaged the engine, was the slowest driver in the field with 1: 23.543 minutes. During Saturday practice, Heidfeld had another accident, he spun over a curb off the track and seriously damaged his underbody and the engine. Alesi lost a few places and ended up in 15th place. Qualifying started very badly after Heidfeld had to switch to the replacement car due to the severe damage in the morning and Alesis' Peugeot engine failed during the third qualifying lap. Alesi positioned himself in 17th place, Heidfeld only reached the penultimate place. Both Prost made up positions after the start of the race and were in 15th and 18th place after the first lap. During the course of the race, Alesi dropped to 17th and Heidfeld to 18th, until they both retired; Alesi on lap 38 because of an electrical fault and Heidfeld on lap 34 because of an engine failure. Four different engines broke down over the weekend; it was the third race weekend with a double retirement.

First double finish despite a public rift

In the run-up to the French Grand Prix , Alain Prost declared that he wanted to find a new engine partner by the end of July. He also revealed that he was in negotiations with Mugen , Supertec and Ferrari , where Alain Prost was dismissed as a driver in a race before the end of the season in 1991 because he compared his Ferrari 643 with a truck.

In preparation for the most important race for the team this season, the home race in France, the Prost team took to the Magny-Cours track for three days with their two regular drivers and test driver Sarrazin a week before the French Grand Prix . A new evolutionary stage of the Peugeot A20 engine was brought along, which, according to the manufacturer, is now "very close to 800 hp " . On June 21, 2000 the racing team started the tests with Alesi and Heidfeld and ended them on June 23, with Sarrazin instead of Alesi driving on the last day. The test drives ended well for the drivers, who expected a lot from the modified engine in terms of performance and reliability.

At a press conference the Thursday before the race, Alesi said that, despite his two-year contract , he would leave Prost for the next season if the car did not improve in reliability in the next races. Later in the season, following rumors of a Lotus takeover, Alesi announced that if Alain Prost no longer had control of the team, he would be leaving the team.

The old engine was still used in both free practice sessions; Heidfeld achieved the eighth fastest lap time of 1: 18.125 minutes and Alesi the twelfth fastest lap time, almost a tenth behind his colleague; On the second day of practice, the team only finished 18th and 20th. The qualifying did not meet the drivers' expectations despite the new engine that was installed during the break between the sessions: Heidfeld achieved 15th and 17th place with 1: 17.374 minutes Alesi was two tenths behind in 18th place. During the meeting, Alesi had difficulties with the transmission of signals from the accelerator pedal and due to general weaknesses in the engine. Among other things, the engine continued to accelerate for a short time even though the accelerator pedal was no longer pressed, and the next attempt to accelerate led to a misfire .

After qualifying, there was public criticism of Peugeot. Alesi became particularly clear with the sentence: “If this engine has 792 hp, then the other 850!” Peugeot was very angry about the public announcement of the internal problems as well as Alesi's harsh criticism and decided to do the warm-up on Sunday refuse to work on the engine for five minutes; a symbolic strike. The sports director of Peugeot , Corrado Provera , countered the criticism and pointed out that the accelerator pedal and its sensors are not part of the engine manufacturer's area of activity and that Peugeot is therefore not to blame for this problem. Alain Prost, on the other hand, was disappointed about the lack of support from Peugeot since the start of the collaboration in 1998.

Both drivers got off to a good start in the race and finished 14th and 15th at the end of the first lap, on the second lap Alesi overtook his colleague and was now in 14th place. On lap four Heidfeld lost one place to Fisichella, with which he won several Fought for position laps and overtook back on lap eleven. This resulted in an internal team disaster, because it was precisely during this overtaking maneuver that Heidfeld touched Alesi on the rear, which then spun. Alesi fell back to 18th place, while Heidfeld remained in 14th place. Alesi was the first to change tires on lap 18 and returned to the race in 19th place. Heidfeld pitted for fresh tires on lap 20 and had his car checked for damage after contact. After that, both drivers were in 19th and 20th place, but were 13th and 15th due to the retirement of other drivers on lap 41. Alesi started battling for his spot with Gené when they touched and spun on lap 52. However, since they were second to last and last place, they did not lose any further ranks. Both Prost drivers finished the race in twelfth and 14th place, Heidfeld apologized to Alesi and the team for touching them after the race. This was the first and only race of the season in which both Prost drivers crossed the finish line.

Low point of the World Cup in Austria

To prepare for the Austrian Grand Prix, the racing team went to the Autodromo di Vairano , which is a few kilometers south of Milan and was only five years old. Stéphane Sarrazin took the wheel for two days, testing new modifications to the aerodynamics such as a newly designed engine cover with a new exhaust pipe and small modified wings at the rear.

On Friday, the Prosts reached 11th place through Alesi and 13th through Heidfeld in the first free practice session in Austria , both drivers were separated by only 16 hundredths of a second. Alesi expressed his fear that qualifying could be very difficult as the drivers were very close together in terms of timing. In the second practice session, the two drivers did not repeat their good positions, Heidfeld's time of 1: 12.698 minutes was only enough for 17th place and Alesi was only 20th. In qualifying, Heidfeld in particular improved by over half a second and placed himself in place 13, while Alesi was three tenths behind his colleague in 17th place. Alesi got off to an excellent start in the race. A couple of cars had an accident in turn one and both Prost pilots avoided the grass, but kept their respective positions. Alesi was in 14th place at the end of the first lap and thus directly behind Heidfeld, who neither won nor lost any position after the start. By lap four they worked their way up to tenth place, when both drivers swapped positions and Alesi was ten ahead of Heidfeld eleven. Alesi then started a fight for position nine with Wurz and passed him on lap 16. Alesi, who was on a two-stop strategy, opened the pit stop series on lap 24 and came back into the race in 13th place after 30 seconds. Heidfeld, moved up to eighth position due to pit stops and failures, completed his only planned pit stop on lap 39 and came back on track after 31 seconds in 13th place, one second ahead of Alesi. On lap 42 the disaster happened from Prost's point of view: Heidfeld was in 13th place ahead of Alesi when he tried to pass his team-mate in turn one, the Niki Lauda curve. Alesi sat inside the curve entrance and Heidfeld overlooked him. Alesi hit the other car at the height of the rear wheel with a lot of force and destroyed his own suspension, while Heidfeld turned into the gravel and also had to give up. This accident meant the fourth total loss of the Prost team this season.

Alesi was angry with Heidfeld because the two-stop strategy made him faster and he was sure that Heidfeld would let him by. After the race, Prost was stunned by the accident, especially since a similar one had already happened in the race before. According to John Walton, Heidfeld had received instructions over the radio to let Alesi pass, as he was using a different strategy than Heidfeld. But the message hadn't arrived because of a radio leak. Both drivers had to go to the race control after the race in order to deal with the accident for the purpose of a possible penalty for the drivers. No penalties were given in the end.

Alesi had a serious accident

After the race weekend, Peugeot officially announced that it would finally withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of the 2000 season. All of the manufacturer's materials, including the fully engineered engines as well as the research and development data , were sold to Asiatech .

In the run-up to the German Grand Prix, Prost tested, alongside Ferrari and Minardi, for two days in Mugello . On day one, Nick Heidfeld set his personal best with 1: 28.946 minutes, half a second behind Genés Minardi and over four seconds behind Barrichello's Ferrari. On the second day, Alesi took over the cockpit and set his fastest training lap with 1: 28.308 minutes, one and a half seconds slower than Barrichello and one and a half seconds faster than Gené.

The German Grand Prix took place at the end of July . In the first free practice session, the Prost came in eleventh and thirteenth. Heidfeld, who had engine problems in the morning, was three tenths faster than Alesi with 1: 45.229 minutes, who in turn complained about the car's insufficient traction. On Saturday, Heidfeld was in 17th place and Alesi in 19th place despite transmission problems; this time the two drivers were separated by four tenths. The qualifying took place under light rain, Heidfeld qualified 13th with 1: 48.690 minutes, Alesi was 20th with 1: 50.289 minutes. After the start, Alesi improved by two places, as Michael Schumacher and Fisichella with one Eliminated in an accident and Button had to start from the back of the field; he lost one place to the very good starter Gené. Alesi stayed behind Gené until lap 25 when he made his first stop when a speedster started a safety car . Heidfeld held his 13th place for the time being until Frentzen overtook him on lap three. Heidfeld then fought with the Sauber drivers, who both overtook him on lap eleven. On lap 24 he made his first refueling stop, meanwhile moved up to twelfth position due to pit stops and accidents. After 31 seconds he came back into the race in last place. So both Prosts were in positions 17 and 18 from lap 26 onwards, only Mazzcane in the Minardi was behind after his refueling stop. When the race was reopened, Heidfeld lost two places to Alesi and Mazzacane and was thus at the bottom of the field. On the same lap, Alesi then retired due to a serious accident with Diniz. When braking for turn two, both drivers touched each other, Alesi tore off the two front wheels and slid unchecked into the guardrails at just under 290 km / h. He then turned several times around the horizontal axis of the vehicle at high speed, but suffered only minor injuries in the accident. Heidfeld was the only Prost driver in the field. On lap 40 he was in tenth place after his second pit stop and thanks to a few failures by other drivers, but he had to retire with a defective alternator . Since only five laps remained, he was classified in twelfth place.

A week after the accident, Alesi was examined by doctors after complaining of acute dizziness, nausea and pain. The doctors gave the green light for the next race in Budapest as nothing was broken and it was only a matter of muscular problems. Meanwhile, Prost tested new aerodynamic components in Barcelona for two days.

Two races with no finish

In the first free practice session on Friday for the Hungarian Grand Prix , Heidfeld was in eleventh place about two seconds behind the best time of the day, Alesi was only a few hundredths behind in 13th. Both cars were equipped with new aerodynamic parts. On Saturday Alesi reached 14th place in practice as well as in qualification, Heidfeld was only 20th in practice and 19th in qualifying with the reserve car, almost three seconds behind the pole position time. After the start of the race, Alesi started fighting for position twelve with Trulli, before damage to the left drive shaft seemed to be on the horizon from lap nine. Alesi pitted after the steering wheel tilted dangerously to the left several times and the car was difficult to control. After a repair stop that lasted almost two minutes, Alesi was the last to restart the race, but the error was not fixed and Alesi gave up the race. Heidfeld made up two positions at the start and was only just behind Zonta in 17th position for several laps when the battery appeared to be failing. Heidfeld was instructed to keep the revs high, but this contradicted the first pit stop as it prevented him from shifting into first gear. Heidfeld then had to end the race early as well.

Since the main sponsors Gauloises and BIC had not yet made a decision about staying with Prost for the 2001 season and it was more likely that they would leave, Alain Prost considered selling further shares to the German company UFA . Before that, the company already owned 10 percent and the team's marketing rights. With the partial sale, Alain Prost could have kept control of the racing team and used the money for new engines. At that time, the racing team was still without an engine contract for the next season and was negotiating with Ferrari about the use of the previous year's engines.

This time the team traveled to Monza for two days on the newly asphalted track to prepare for Spa. Alesi started on both days and covered a total of 117 laps, his best time was 1: 28.560 minutes. The engine went on strike once on both days.

Jean Alesi at the Belgian Grand Prix

On Friday in Belgium , the two cheers took the last places, more than three seconds behind the day's best time. Alesi did not set a lap time all morning because of a defective fuel pump, Heidfeld couldn't find the right set-up for the car. On the second day the lap times of both drivers improved considerably. Alesi was in eleventh position three and a half seconds faster than on Friday and Heidfeld was only half a second behind in 13th place. In qualifying, Alesi did not repeat his best lap time and only achieved 17th place with 1: 53.309 minutes. On his last attempt to set a better lap time, he spun in turn 19. Heidfeld was in 14th place with a tenth advantage over the French. The race started with rain tires, Alesi drove up to position 15 after the start and was thus directly behind his colleague, who kept his position after the start. Alesi was the first driver to enter the pit lane on lap four and Heidfeld on lap five for dry tires, while everyone else was still on wet tires. After a series of pit stops, Alesi was eighth on lap seven and achieved the fastest lap time of all drivers with 2: 00.889 minutes. On lap nine he was even in fourth position after everyone had switched to dry tires. Heidfeld could not follow his colleague after a bad pit stop. On lap twelve he was in 17th position when an engine failure ended his race. This defect was due to the first pit stop on lap five when Heidfeld destroyed the first gear of his transmission. This happened because he was downshifting at too high revs. Since the engine and the gearbox had a common oil circuit, an engine failure occurred due to an oil loss in the course of the race. On lap 18, Alesi pitted for his second stop and returned to the race in tenth place after 31 seconds. His last stop was on lap 31, again in fifth position; after 29 seconds he moved on to ninth place. Meanwhile, fourth-placed Barrichello was eliminated and Alesi was in eighth place just ahead of the points, but he had to give up the race on the same lap due to a defective fuel pump.

After the race, Alesi said he would not leave Prost and fulfill his two-year contract if Alain Prost kept control of the team during the 2001 season. Heidfeld, on the other hand, signed a three-year contract with Sauber , replacing Pedro Diniz. As a substitute for the free place in the Prost team, Diniz was traded, who with Parmalat could bring a financially strong sponsor into the team. Prost initially postponed the decision to replace Heidfeld.

Many more failures at the end

All teams met at the end of August for four days for a joint preparation phase on the Monza race track. On day one Heidfeld took over the wheel and was penultimate with 1: 28.801 minutes, only Gené in the Minardi was half a second slower. The next day Heidfeld achieved a slightly slower time and was 16th out of a total of 18 drivers. Alesi took over the car for the last two days and finished 14th out of a total of 18 drivers on the third day. On the final day, Alesi was the slowest driver with his best time of 1: 28.051 minutes.

The first free practice session for the Italian Grand Prix started badly for Prost, both cars only finished 19 and 22nd. Alesi only drove in the morning because the car had a hydraulic problem and the repair took the whole afternoon. On Saturday Alesi finished 13th with 1: 25.299 minutes, Heidfeld in 15th was just behind. Qualifying took place in great heat, which Alain Prost said did not benefit the cars. Alesi and Heidfeld qualified for places 19 and 20, leaving only the two Minardis with the outdated Fondmetal engines behind. At the start of the race, Alesi's engine died and the car had to be pushed into the pit lane, from where it started the race one lap behind. Heidfeld overtook several vehicles that had to pit for repairs after a major accident in turn three, and on lap two was tenth. After the race was reopened on lap eleven, he fought with Zonta for his position and lost it on lap 13. Since Button and Villeneuve were out, Heidfeld was in ninth place when he turned his car on lap 15 and did not continue the race could. Alesi, who drove with a one-stop strategy, was at the bottom of the field throughout the race and finished twelfth and last, two laps behind.

Unlike the other teams, Alain Prost did not initiate test drives to prepare for the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway . On Friday before the first free practice session for the US Grand Prix , Alain Prost announced that Prost would use Ferrari engines from next season. The first day ended catastrophically for Alesi, he hardly drove due to engine problems and achieved the slowest time of 1: 18.213 minutes, around a second slower than the penultimate driver Fisichella. Heidfeld was the 14th fastest pilot at the end of the day. On the second day Heidfeld was in 15th place and Alesi's problems did not subside, so that he only came in 21st. In qualifying, Alesi again improved insignificantly, despite an engine that broke down during the day, and qualified in twentieth, while Heidfeld started the race in 16th position. After the start, both drivers made up a lot of positions and were in 14th and 17th place when they both pitted on lap four for new dry tires. Because the other drivers drove to the pits later, Alesi and Heidfeld overtook numerous cars and were in 15th and 16th place on lap 20. On lap 26, Heidfeld overtook his stable colleague. Heidfeld made his last pit stop on lap 43, Alesi followed five laps later. At the beginning of the 65th lap, both Prosts finished eighth and ninth when Alesi had to give up the race due to an engine failure. Heidfeld fought for eighth place with Diniz, but lost time due to poor traction and was overtaken six laps before the end. The tenth-placed Wurz also approached Heidfeld, who however saved ninth place at the finish.

On the Monday after the race weekend, the Prost team announced that Gauloises would not extend the existing sponsorship contract. The French cigarette maker has been the racing team's main sponsor since it was founded in 1997. Alain Prost only commented on this by saying that the termination of the partnership was not surprising and that the team had already prepared for it in advance. Back in France, the racing team undertook test drives in Magny-Cours in preparation for next year. Stéphane Sarrazin covered 147 laps in three days, his best time was 1: 17.672 minutes.

At the beginning of October the team traveled to Japan for the penultimate race of the season . On Friday, when both drivers were working intensively on a good set-up for the race, Heidfeld and Alesi finished 14th and 20th. On Saturday, both drivers were 15th and 19th. Qualifying was disappointing. Alesi improved to 17th place and Heidfeld was only slightly ahead of that to 16th, but Alain Prost hoped for better starting positions for the race. After the start of the race, Alesi overtook his teammate and followed Salo for several laps. By lap 19, Alesi worked his way up to eleventh thanks to various pit stops by other drivers, but his engine burst at turn five and he spun on the track; the defective Peugeot engine spread a lot of engine oil on the road. Heidfeld held his position until lap 18, when he made his first stop and returned to the race in 18th place. On lap 39, Heidfeld was the last driver to complete his planned stop and returned to position 16. On lap 42, Heidfeld also had to give up the race because his left rear wheel suspension failed. It was the seventh time this season that none of the team's cars reached the finish.

For the vacant position of technical director for the 2001 Formula 1 World Championship , Henri Durand was hired. Durand has worked at Équipe Ligier in the past , where he was involved in the design development of the JS23 , JS25 and JS27 , with which Ligier achieved fifth place in the constructors' world championship. Durand later switched to Ferrari through an offer from John Barnard and helped develop the Ferrari 640 with; Nigel Mansel scored two victories with the car and Gerhard Berger one victory. In 1990 Alain Prost came to Ferrari, where Durand first worked with the four-time Formula 1 world champion. In mid-1990, Durand replaced chief aerodynamicist Mike Gascoyne at McLaren; Durand held this position until the fall of 2000, when he left the team despite the successes in the late 1990s.

Meanwhile, the second driver's seat next to Alesi was still open and Prost was still in negotiations with Pedro Diniz and Marc Gené. But after Gené showed more interest in a Minardi contract extension for 2001 and Telefonica ended his sponsorship commitment in Formula 1 at the end of the season, the Spaniard left the negotiations for the free prostrate spot.

Unlike the other teams Prost put a no preparation days at other circuits and flew instead with the staff in Bali to be mentally on the Malaysian Grand Prix prepare. During the first practice session in Sepang, both drivers did not do well, Alesi finished 18th and Heidfeld only covered a few laps due to an engine failure and was the slowest driver at the end of the day. On Saturday in the last free practice session of this season, Heidfeld improved extremely and in the end he finished 13th, one and a half seconds behind the top time of Coulthard. Alesi, who had slight difficulties handling the car, was two tenths behind his colleague in 19th place. In qualifying, both drivers were 18th and 19th, Alesi's fastest time was two and a half seconds behind Michael Schumacher's pole position. The race started badly for Prost. In turn two, Diniz braked and slid into Alesi's stern; Alesi spun from the impact. At the same time, Heidfeld, who was next to Alesi, had to move outside and met Pedro de la Rosa there, who was overturned by the force. Alesi continued for the time being, Heidfeld, de la Rosa and Diniz retired during the first lap. The accident called the safety car out, Alesi didn't have to stop for repairs and caught up with the field. He covered the fastest race lap to date with 2: 40.430 minutes; which Coulthard, after the race was released on lap three, clearly undercut with 1: 42.544 minutes. Alesi now fought with a battered car against both Minardis, on lap six he passed Mazzacane first and three laps later also Gené. He made his first pit stop on lap 16, and after 34 seconds he came back to 17th position in the race. His second and last stop took place on lap 35, during which he was lapped by the leader Michael Schumacher. Due to further failures by Ralf Schumacher, Ricardo Zonta and Johnny Herbert, Alesi finished the race one lap behind in eleventh and thus penultimate place, only Trulli was 18 seconds behind him.

After the season

Summary of the team

Alain Prost was very disappointed with the way the season went after the last race. He is glad that the season is over and the team can concentrate fully on the new season. The Formula 1 World Championship 2000 was by far the worst season since the team was founded in 1997, no points were scored for the constructors' championship and Prost was even in last position behind Minardi, as the best positions for the Italians from Faenza were three eighth places, while Prost only booked an eighth place in Monaco. Heidfeld was very surprised at how bad his debut season went.

Changes for the new season

Despite the advanced negotiations with Pedro Diniz, the vacant driver position for the 2001 season went to Minardi driver Gastón Mazzacane , who was supported by the Panamerican Sports Network . Diniz, who had long been in discussion for the vacant driver position, ended his active driving career after six years in Formula 1 and joined Prost as an investor. The Brazilian invested 10 million US dollars for a 40 percent stake in the French racing team and has been responsible for the management ever since. Alain Prost, however, remained the main shareholder in his racing team.

Despite a three-year contract, Yahoo ended its engagement with Prost at the end of the season

After the 2000 season, the long-time main sponsor Gauloises , who had financially supported the Prost Grand Prix since it was founded in 1997 and thus enjoyed a lot of power in the team, left the racing team. Furthermore, despite a three-year contract, Yahoo , who only started their engagement at the beginning of the season, ended the partnership with Prost. Further still left Agfa , BIC , DMG , Europcar , tradition , Playstation and some smaller French sponsors such as Sescoi and Cegetel the team. New sponsors included Acer , Adecco , Aprilia , Bang & Olufsen , Fiat , MSC Software , Parmalat , PSN , Puma and Ray-Ban .

After Alan Jenkins had been fired while the world championship was still in progress, the team hired Henri Durand as the new technical director in October . Joan Villadelprat also joined the racing team as Chief Operating Officer to support Alain Prost and Sports Director John Walton . The Spaniard Villadelprat previously worked at McLaren and Ferrari as a racing mechanic and at Tyrrell and Benetton as a team manager. The designer Jean-Paul Gousset and the aerodynamicist Loïc Bigois kept their respective positions beyond the season.

Since Peugeot announced its complete retirement as an engine manufacturer from Formula 1 in the run-up to the German Grand Prix, Prost had to look around for a long time for an engine solution for 2001. After numerous negotiations with, among others, Mercedes, Alain Prost found what he was looking for with Ferrari. After the Italian Grand Prix, the Italians declared a two-year partnership with conditions similar to those of Sauber. So Prost received the previous year's engines and had to have them renamed. The new main sponsor Acer was nominated as the manufacturer's name and so the racing team entered the 2001 season with the Ferrari Tipo 049 disguised as the Acer 01A .

For the new world championship, Prost also changed the tire manufacturer; until then, Prost had sourced the tires from Bridgestone . The entry of Michelin opened up a new opportunity to win a French partner. Shortly before Christmas 2000, both parties signed a three-year contract. Alain Prost was impressed by the hard work leading up to the first season with Michelin and expected a high level of competitiveness against Bridgestone. Michelin's sporting director Pierre Dupasquier said he was delighted to be able to supply another team and hoped that this would give him more information in order to be able to further develop the tires effectively.

Painting and sponsorship

Gauloises was not allowed to advertise with their logo in two races

In 2000, as in previous years, the basic color of the vehicle was kept completely in a darker blue, only a few struts of the rear wing, the foremost part of the front wing and the underbody were black and the mirrors were kept completely red thanks to the fuel supplier . The main sponsor was again Gauloises ; the French cigarette maker advertised on the rear wing, the front wing and the airbox. The second sponsor Yahoo , who supported the Prost team for the first time this season, advertised on the side pods , on the nose and on the headrest . Sony advertised its new PlayStation game console on the bargeboards and driver's helmets, and the French stationery manufacturer BIC advertised directly behind the bargeboards and on the nose directly in front of the driver . The French catering company Sodexho advertised on the rear wing . Further sponsors were 3M , DMG , Europcar and Sparco .

Tobacco advertising had to be avoided in the races in Great Britain and France . Instead, white bars of different widths were placed in the places of the logos; The only exception was the airbox, as the area was without sponsors.

driver

Regular drivers were Jean Alesi and Nick Heidfeld , and Stéphane Sarrazin was nominated again as test and reserve driver . Before joining the Prost Grand Prix, Jean Alesi worked for Tyrrell, Ferrari, Benetton and Sauber. During his first season for Ferrari in 1991, Alesi was Alain Prost's team-mate, later Gerhard Berger was his team-mate at Ferrari and Benetton for five years . The extremely spirited Frenchman won a single race in the course of his career, the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix , and was on the podium of the top three a total of 32 times. His best world championship placement was two fourth places in the 1996 and 1997 seasons . The second driver Nick Heidfeld made his Formula 1 debut with Prost Grand Prix, before that the young German was represented in various formula racing series. In 1997 he won the German Formula 3 Championship and rose to the International Formula 3000 in 1998 , which he clearly won in 1999 . Heidfeld gained his first experience with a Formula 1 racing car in December 1997 when he undertook test drives with McLaren. For the 1998 and 1999 world championships , McLaren nominated Heidfeld as the official test and reserve driver. Stéphane Sarrazin was nominated as the official Prost substitute driver for the third time in a row. Before that, he drove in French Formula 3 for several years and was runner-up in this racing series in 1997 . Parallel to his involvement with Prost, he also competed in the International Formula 3000, his best result was fourth place in the final ranking of 1999. Sarrazin made his Formula 1 debut in 1999 when he was on the wrist for Minardi at the Brazilian Grand Prix injured Luca Badoer replaced.

Further use of the vehicles

A total of five different vehicles were produced. The AP03-01 model , which one of the two regular drivers fielded on every Formula 1 race weekend, was auctioned off without the Peugeot engine on October 29, 2000 during an Internet auction organized by main sponsor Yahoo as part of the sponsorship agreement. The proceeds from the auction were donated to UNICEF . It was the first ever Internet auction of a Formula 1 car. The AP03-02 is on display in the Ligier Museum on the Magny-Cours circuit . The models AP03-03 and AP03-04 were sold in a foreclosure auction in 2002 after the racing team went bankrupt. The AP03-05 model is exhibited in the Peugeot Museum in Sochaux .

Others

The Prost AP03 was the last Formula 1 racing car to be powered by a Peugeot engine.
