Mike Gascoyne

Mike Gascoyne (born April 2, 1963 in Norwich , England) is a British Formula 1 engineer and long-time technical director with various Formula 1 teams. Gascoyne is currently part of the Caterham Group's management team and CEO of materials specialist Caterham Composites.

Gascoyne was born in Norfolk , England . From 1982 to 1988 he studied fluid mechanics at Cambridge University ( Churchill College ).

Formula 1 career

After a brief stint at Westland System Assessment Limited, part of Westland Helicopters, Gascoyne joined McLaren Racing in 1989 as a wind tunnel engineer. Gascoyne then worked for the Formula 1 teams Sauber , Tyrrell and Jordan before switching from Renault to the Toyota team in December 2003 . There he was responsible for the successful Toyota TF105, which made it possible for the team to join the top teams for the first time. On April 4, 2006, Gascoyne was released. Above all, the bad start to the season with the Toyota TF106 he designed is said to be the main reason for this. His salary at the Japanese racing team was believed to be about $ 8 million a year, making him arguably the highest-paid Formula 1 engineer, even compared to more successful technical directors like Adrian Newey and Ross Brawn . In the 2007 and 2008 seasons Gascoyne worked as chief technician at Team Force India (formerly Spyker F1 ) and was replaced by James Key in 2009 .

In September 2009 Gascoyne was commissioned by Tony Fernandes to set up the new F1 team Lotus F1 Racing, which today starts under the name Caterham F1 Team . The team made its first race appearance after only five months of development and construction work successfully in Bahrain.

Stations

Gascoyne's direct management style has proven to be very successful throughout his career, particularly in setting up new projects such as the new Caterham F1 team and restructuring existing motorsport teams such as Renault and Toyota .

MGI Consultancy

Gascoyne founded MGI Consultancy in Oxford in 2001, specializing in engineering and project management in the automotive, motorsport, aircraft and water sports sectors.

Caterham Challenge

MGI Consultancy is currently leading Project Caterham Challenge, a campaign that seeks to apply project management and technology developments applied in Formula 1 to the organization and technical support of professional ocean-going sailing teams. The campaign is running in collaboration with the Caterham Group, especially Caterham Technology and Caterham Composites.

The Caterham Challenge, a Class 40 racing yacht, took part in the ocean-going regatta Transat Jacques Vabre from Le Havre, France to Itajai, Brazil, in 2013 with Mike Gascoyne as skipper and Brian Thompson as co-skipper .

Caterham Le Mans

MGI Consultancy provided technical support for the Caterham Group's first Le Mans appearance in June 2013.

Personal

During his time at Cambridge University Gascoyne led two expeditions to the Himalayas (1986-1987), during which he climbed the Bandarpunch and Sudarshan Parbat, among others. These expeditions were followed by a newfound interest in the then still young sport of paragliding (1989–1992).

Gascoyne took part in four races in the British BOSS GP series in 1999, in which he drove the Tyrrell 022 and the Tyrrell 025. Both cars had been developed by himself during his time at Tyrrell.

Following his passion for competitive extreme sports, Gascoyne fulfilled a lifelong dream in November 2013 and sailed alone without stopping on a Class 40 racing yacht from Cascais (Portugal) to Grenada in the Caribbean, where he arrived on December 14, 2012 after 16 days .

Gascoynes nickname "the Rottweiler" comes from his time with the English Formula 1 team Tyrell, during which he worked under his mentor Harvey Postlethwaite . Originally “Harvey's Pit Bull”, the name “Rottweiler” stuck to him to this day.

Mike Gascoyne now lives in Oxfordshire and Norfolk, England with his partner Silvi and their three children Joel, Connie and Freddie.
