After the French Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 12 points ahead of David Coulthard and 18 points ahead of Mika Häkkinen . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 6 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 70 points ahead of Benetton-Supertec .
Coulthard contested his 100th Grand Prix at the Austrian Grand Prix.
With Jacques Villeneuve and Häkkinen (one each), two former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Luciano Burti made his Formula 1 debut for Jaguar at this Grand Prix as a replacement for Eddie Irvine , who had to break off the race weekend after Friday practice due to illness.

In Friday practice there was a McLaren double lead with Coulthard in front of Häkkinen. Mika Salo came third. Both McLaren drivers stayed in front in Saturday practice. This time, however, Häkkinen was the faster pilot. Michael Schumacher came in third.
Qualifying
In the qualifying session, Häkkinen prevailed and drove Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello on pole position .
Warm up
In the warm-up, Barrichello was the first time that a McLaren driver took first position. Coulthard and Häkkinen followed in second and third place.
