The Austrian Grand Prix 2017 (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria 2017 ) took place on July 9th at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg and was the ninth race of the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship .

backgrounds

After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 42 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 24 points and Red Bull Racing with 113 points .

At the Austrian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

In the curves Schlossgold , Würth and curve eight , the number of tire stacks was increased due to the higher vehicle speeds due to the rule changes for the 2017 season. At the pit entrance there were now TecPro barriers in front of the guard rail . The additional curb stones introduced in the previous year with a height of 100 mm were now only at the exit of the Rauch , Rindt and Red Bull Mobile curves and were 3.20 meters apart. Further drainage systems were built in order to achieve better drainage of the rainwater when it rains. In addition, new, very flat curb stones were installed in several places. However, this measure had no relation to Formula 1, but this change was made for motorcycle races.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began exactly 85 meters after the Remus , the measuring point was 360 meters before this curve. The second zone was on the start-finish straight and began 110 meters after the Red Bull Mobile , the distance between the vehicles was measured ten meters after the Rindt .

At this race, Ferrari made a new engine update available that was only used by the Haas team. The Ferrari works team still used the old specification during the race.

Vettel (nine), Daniil Kwjat , Kevin Magnussen , Jolyon Palmer , Sergio Pérez , Carlos Sainz jr. (five each), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean , Stoffel Vandoorne (three each), Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Pascal Wehrlein (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

Following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the FIA announced an incident between Hamilton and Vettel, in which Vettel first ran into Hamilton during a safety car phase , then drove next to Hamilton and rammed him sideways, despite the from to re-examine the ten-second penalty given to the race stewards in the week before the Austrian Grand Prix. Vettel had already become conspicuous at the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix when he berated race director Charlie Whiting on the radio. At the time, the FIA refrained from punishing after a public apology, but threatened to bring the case to the FIA's international tribunal if the case persisted. Again, the FIA refrained from punishing if Vettel publicly apologized for his behavior. In addition, he must do youth work in the FIA Formula 2 championship , the European Formula 3 championship and a Formula 4 championship to be determined and attend a seminar with the FIA commissioners.

With Lewis Hamilton (once) a former winner took part in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Walter Jobst (AUT), Tim Mayer (USA), Andrew Mallalieu (BRB) and Mika Salo (FIN).

free training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 05.975 minutes, ahead of Verstappen and Bottas.

In the second free practice, Hamilton was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 05.483 minutes, ahead of Vettel and Bottas.

Vettel set the best time in the third free practice in 1: 05.092 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Bottas.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. The Sauber and Williams pilots and Palmer were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was the only driver to set his fastest lap on Supersoft . Bottas was the fastest. Magnussen, who did not drive time after a break in the suspension in Q1, Kwjat, the McLaren drivers and Hulkenberg were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Bottas drove the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 04.251 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. It was the second pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Hamilton was moved five starting positions down due to a premature gear change. Since the turbocharger in Wehrlein’s vehicle was replaced with a non-identical part due to a defect after qualifying , he had to start the race from the pit lane.

run

Bottas won the race ahead of Vettel and Ricciardo. It was Bottas' second victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, Vettel achieved the seventh and Ricciardo the fifth podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Hamilton, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Pérez, Ocon, Massa and Lance Stroll .

The first three places in both the drivers 'and the constructors' standings remained unchanged.
