Reports
background
There was only one week between the German Grand Prix and the tenth round of the World Championship in Austria.
The Lotus team announced a third car for the debutant Nigel Mansell . ATS reduced its involvement back to just one car. The rest of the field was unchanged compared to the previous weekend. At Alfa Romeo there was still no replacement for the fatally injured Patrick Depailler .
training
Jochen Mass had a serious accident in the first free practice session on Friday. His arrows rolled over and landed upside down in a field. Since the ground was freshly plowed and therefore very soft, not only the roll bar of the car sank into it, but also Mass' head and helmet. Due to injuries, he had to forego participation in qualifying training and the race.
The two Renault drivers qualified for the front row of the grid, with René Arnoux taking pole position with a lap time more than a second shorter than his team mate Jean-Pierre Jabouille . The Williams factory drivers Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann formed the second row in front of the two Ligiers from Jacques Laffite and Didier Pironi .
Once again, who had Ferrari pilots Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter with disappointing for their circumstances grid positions 15 and 22 resign.
run
Alan Jones took the lead from René Arnoux and Bruno Giacomelli , who had an excellent start from eighth place. During the first lap, however, he was ousted from this position again by Pironi and Jabouille.
The Renault drivers were able to make full use of their turbocharged performance advantage on the high-speed track and pushed Jones out of the lead by the fourth lap. At the same time, Pironi fell back, so that fourth place was taken by Giacomelli, followed by Carlos Reutemann and Nelson Piquet .
In the 12th lap, Derek Daly was lucky when he was moving towards a barbed wire fence at high speed due to a defective brake system. Since his car spun just before the collision, he was uninjured.
Piquet passed Reutemann and Giacomelli. That put him in fourth place. When Arnoux, who had been the leader to date, headed for the pits on lap 21 to have his tires changed, the Brazilian briefly came third behind Jabouille and Jones, but was overtaken by Reutemann on the next lap.
Nigel Mansell's Grand Prix debut ended on lap 41 with engine failure. Until then, due to a mishap of his mechanics when refueling before the start, the Briton had been wearing overalls that were partly soaked in gasoline.
In the closing stages, Jabouille had problems with his tires, which allowed Jones to catch up and barely crossed the finish line in second. Carlos Reutemann came third in front of Jacques Laffite, Nelson Piquet and Elio de Angelis .
Jabouille received World Championship points for the first time in the current season, having previously been eliminated in promising positions several times.
