Arrows A3

The Arrows A3 was a Formula 1 racing car that was used by Arrows in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1980 and 1981 .

Technology and racing history

The Arrows A3, designed by Tony Southgate and Dave Wass , was a compact racing car. The car had a short wheelbase and a narrow track. In terms of aerodynamics, the A3 followed the A2 , but received a new gearbox that reduced air resistance. The monocoque was made in a sandwich construction and the vehicle had internal springs and dampers. Riccardo Patrese achieved the best result with the A3 in 1980 with second place at the Grand Prix of the USA West in Long Beach.

At the end of 1980 Tony Southgate left the team and Dave Wass developed the car for the 1981 season on his own. Arrows switched from Michelin to Pirelli tires and had to stop working on an active wheel suspension for cost reasons. The Italian Siegfried Stohr joined the team for Jochen Mass . In 1981, only Riccardo Patrese achieved top positions with the A3 . He finished third in the Brazilian Grand Prix and second in the San Marino Grand Prix .

After finishing seventh in 1980, the Arrows team achieved eighth place in the constructors' cup with the A3 in 1981.
