Jerome Chen (born October 2, 1919 in Chengdu , Sichuan , China , † June 17, 2019 ) was a Chinese-Canadian historian .

Life

Jerome Chen studied at Nankai University in Tientsin and at the National Associated Southwest University and at the London School of Economics and Political Science during the anti-Japanese war . He worked for the BBC in the 1950s . Before emigrating to Canada , he taught history at the University of Leeds (Great Britain) for a few years .

Chen was Professor of Chinese History at York University in Toronto , Canada from 1971 to 1987 and Director of the York University Joint Center of Asia Pacific Studies from 1983 to 1985 .

In 1981 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and in 1984 he was Distinguished Research Professor at York University.
