The Arrows A19 was the Formula 1 racing cars of Arrows Grand Prix International for the 1998 season , took part in all 16 races of the season.
Technology and development
The engine used was a 3.0-liter V10 engine with the designation T2-F1 developed in-house. It weighed 120 kg and developed 700 hp at a maximum of 15,000 rpm . The team owner of Arrows, Tom Walkinshaw , bought into the English engine manufacturer Hart Racing Engines after the previous year's engine was too prone to defects and an alternative was sought. This made Arrows the first British team since BRM 1977 to produce the engine in addition to the chassis.
The transmission was a sequential six-speed semi-automatic transmission from our own production. The front and rear wheels were suspended from double wishbones , and the tires were supplied by Bridgestone . The brake system had ceramic brake discs made of silicon carbide reinforced with carbon fibers .
Racing history
In the first week of February 1998, the new A19 was successfully tested for the first time in Silverstone by Pedro Diniz . The car was officially launched on February 17th in Leafield , Arrows' base. After the presentation, test drives took place in Barcelona. These tests showed that the engine was too weak compared to the competition and the gearbox made of CFRP was too fragile.
With a total of 32 race starts, the goal was only reached ten times. The transmission, engine and, at the end of the season, the car's hydraulic system were the ones most prone to failure.
Painting and sponsorship
In contrast to the previous year, the car was kept entirely in black. Main sponsor Danka advertised on the rear wing, the airbox and on the nose directly in front of the driver. The other main sponsor, Zepter, advertised with its logo on the side radiators, Parmalat on the air deflectors next to the driver and Power Horse on the front wing. Other sponsors were Eagle Star , Remus and Tom Walkinshaw Racing .
driver
The drivers were Pedro Diniz and Mika Salo ; Frenchman Emmanuel Collard and South African Stephen Watson were nominated as test drivers . Last year's driver Damon Hill switched to Jordan for the 1998 season .
