The Stewart SF2 was the Formula 1 racing cars of Stewart Grand Prix for the 1998 season , took part in all 16 races of the season.

Technology and development

The technical director for the development was Alan Jenkins , under him were Andy Le Flemming for the construction and Eghbal Hamidy for the aerodynamic shape of the car. The engine was a Ford Zetec R-V10 naturally aspirated engine with 3.0 l displacement, which developed around 540 kW 735 hp at 16,000 rpm  . Stewart built the six-speed semi-automatic transmission in cooperation with X-Trac . The wheels were individually suspended on double wishbones with internal spring-damper units from Penske operated via push rods . The disc brakes were equipped with brake discs made of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide ceramic.

Racing history

The Stewart SF2 was presented on January 13, 1998. Unlike Williams and Benetton, among others, the team did not test in Barcelona at the beginning of February, but like Arrows in Great Britain. Rubens Barrichello drove the car for the first time on February 3rd at Santa Pod Raceway , and two days later the tests were moved to Silverstone. On the first day of practice at Silverstone, Magnussen was only able to complete half a lap before the engine failed. At the end of February, the team also flew to Barcelona for testing, but was around four seconds slower than the fastest lap time, driven by Mika Häkkinen. The tests revealed the lack of durability of the transmission, which caused many failures over the course of the season.

From the team's point of view, the season was disappointing. The chassis was good and the engine strong, but due to various defects and a lack of durability, there were several failures. Transmission defects were the cause of failure six times, driving errors four times and engine defects three times. At the end of the season Stewart finished with five points - scored by Magnussen in Canada and Barrichello in Spain and Monaco - only eighth place in the constructors' championship, one point behind Arrows and four in front of Prost .

Painting and sponsorship

The paintwork of the car is completely white, the rear and nose are adorned with a tartan pattern , the trademark of Jackie Stewart's helmet. The main sponsor HSBC advertised on the rear wing, front wing and the side radiators, while the engine supplier Ford advertised on the airbox and next to the cockpit. Other sponsors were Bridgestone , Hewlett Packard , Hugo Boss and Texaco .

driver

As in the previous year, the drivers were Rubens Barrichello and Jan Magnussen , who was replaced by the nominated test driver Jos Verstappen after the race in Canada . However, towards the end of the season, the mood between team boss Jackie Stewart and Verstappen deteriorated so much that Verstappen's contract was not extended after the last race.

Further use of the chassis

One car driven by Rubens Barrichello is on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and one by Jos Verstappen is on display at the National Museum of Scotland .
