The Santa Pod Raceway is a motorsport - racing circuit in Podington , England . It is the first permanent racetrack in Europe exclusively for drag racing competitions.
history
Drag races were held for the first time in 1966 on the site of Royal Air Force Station Podington , a former military airfield of the United States Army Air Forces from World War II. The racetrack got its name from the well-known Santa Ana Dragstrip in California, America, combined with the name of Podington, which is adjacent to the racetrack.
The Santa Pod Raceway is an integral part of the FIA - European Dragster Championship and the FIM - European Drag Bike Championship . Since then, championship runs of the two European championships have been held on this track every year. Furthermore, national drag races or drift shows take place on the racetrack.
In 1984 Sammy Miller drove the drag racing world record (over the quarter mile), which is still valid today, on the Santa Pod Raceway in a time of 3.58 seconds with a rocket dragster from the Funny Car class.
