The Stewart SF01 was the first Formula 1 - racing cars of Stewart . The SF01 was used in the 1997 season and, for the first time in Formula 1 history, Alan Jenkins designed it completely aerodynamically with the help of computer programs. The car was presented on December 29, 1996 and took part in all 17 races of the 1997 Formula 1 season. He was driven by the Brazilian Rubens Barrichello and the Dane Jan Magnussen and achieved second place at the Monaco Grand Prix - which meant that the team finished the constructors' championship in its first season with six points in ninth place out of eleven. The Zetec-R V10 engine came from Ford , the tires from Bridgestone and the fuel from Texaco .

Technology and development

The technical developer was Alan Jenkins , subordinate to him were the designer Andy Le Flemming and Eghbal Hamidy for aerodynamics. The engineering team had to start completely without reference values, as the team had not previously had a Formula 1 chassis. On both axles, the wheels were individually suspended from double wishbones , and the internal springs and shock absorbers were operated via push rods. The transmission, a six-speed sequential semi-automatic transmission, came from Xtrac .

Engine was the JD-V10 naturally aspirated engine of Ford Zetec-R cc with a displacement of 2,998 and a cylinder bank angle of 72 °. It developed around 522 kW (700 hp) at 16,500 rpm. This enables the car to reach speeds of up to 330 km / h.

The car was the first to be developed by the new Stewart team . The bolide was presented to the public for the first time on December 29, 1996, together with the Arrows A18 . When it was released, technical director Alan Jenkins claimed that this car was designed exclusively on the computer for the first time in Formula 1 history. Tyrrell's designer , Harvey Postlethwaite , hugged Jenkins when they were presented, claiming that their vehicles had not been designed on the drawing board since 1989 .

It turned out that the car would be competitive in theory and places in the upper midfield should not be uncommon, but the car was very lacking in reliability. Out of a total of 34 starts, they only finished eight times, and both cars were eliminated in ten races. Eight times it was the engine or you caused an accident, three times because of the transmission or because of oil pressure problems, twice because of hydraulic problems and once each time because of the handling, the suspension, the brakes or the drive. However, with a sensational second place in Monaco , experienced by Rubens Barrichello , the new team also celebrated the first podium finish.

Painting and sponsorship

The paintwork of the car was completely white, from the rear to the nose adorned the Royal Stewart tartan , the trademark of Jackie Stewart's helmet. The main sponsors were the engine supplier Ford , who placed their logo on the airbox, the headrest and the nose, the major British bank HSBC , whose logo was on the inside of the front wing and on the side radiators, and the country of Malaysia , which took the space on the rear wing and outside stressed on the front wing. The Japanese electronics company Sanyo advertised on the air baffles and the fuel supplier Texaco placed its logo on the side next to the driver and the tip of the nose.
