Reports
background
After Manfred Winkelhock was killed in a sports car race in Mosport Park on the weekend between the German Grand Prix and the eleventh World Cup round of the year in Austria , he was replaced by Kenny Acheson at RAM Racing .
The team Toleman extended its commitment to two cars and took to the at Osella dismissed Piercarlo Ghinzani under contract.
Niki Lauda announced that he would finally end his racing career at the end of the season. Keke Rosberg was hired as his successor at McLaren . His place at Williams was then assured Nelson Piquet , who in turn was to be replaced by Elio de Angelis .
training
Alain Prost was the only one to complete his fastest training lap with an average speed of more than 250 km / h, thus securing pole position from Nigel Mansell . The second row was made up of Niki Lauda and Keke Rosberg, followed by Nelson Piquet and Teo Fabi .
run
Lauda initially took the lead. Due to a mass collision in which Nigel Mansell, Michele Alboreto , Elio de Angelis and Gerhard Berger , among others , were involved, the race was stopped by the red flag before the end of the first lap.
At the restart, which was carried out after around 45 minutes of clean-up work, Prost took over the lead in front of Rosberg. However, since he retired after four laps due to an engine failure, there was a McLaren one-two lead in front of Piquet, de Angelis and Mansell.
Andrea de Cesaris had an accident at high speed on lap 14 . His car rolled over several times, but eventually came to a stop on the wheels. When de Cesaris, who had previously been noticed several times in serious accidents, returned to his box unharmed on foot, he was immediately dismissed by his team boss Guy Ligier .
After a pit stop, Prost fell behind Lauda on lap 26. Ayrton Senna had meanwhile got past de Angelis into third place, which was favored by the technical failures of Mansell and Piquet.
Twelve laps before the end of the race, Lauda retired due to a turbocharger failure, so that Prost won ahead of Senna and Alboreto. Stefan Johansson , Elio de Angelis and Marc Surer finished fourth to sixth.
