The 2015 Grand Prix of Austria (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria 2015 ) took place on June 21 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg and was the eighth race of the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship .
report
backgrounds
After the Canadian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings 17 points ahead of Nico Rosberg and 43 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 105 points and Williams with 181 points .
At the Austrian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began exactly 85 meters after the Remus , the measuring point was 360 meters before this curve. The second zone was on the start-and-finish straight and began 110 meters after the Red Bull Mobile , the distance between the vehicles was measured ten meters after the Rindt .
A change was made to the track in the Rindt : Because the pilots there often disregarded the track barriers in the previous year, a strip of artificial turf was laid directly behind the curb. In addition, the curbs at the exit of the Remus , Schlossgold , Rauch , Würth , Rindt and Red Bull Mobile curves have been extended.
Pastor Maldonado , Sergio Pérez (four each), Marcus Ericsson , Vettel (three each), Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Roberto Merhi and Max Verstappen (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Rosberg (once) a former winner competed in this Grand Prix.
Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Walter Jobst (AUT), Radovan Novak (CZE) and Danny Sullivan (USA) acted as race commissioners .
training
In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 10.401 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen . In the second free practice, Vettel was fastest in 1: 09.600 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Raikkonen.
In the third free practice session, Vettel again set the fastest time in 1: 09.994 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. After the track was wet at the beginning of practice, it dried off during the qualifying segment and the best times were set with slicks. Rosberg was the fastest. The Manor pilots, Raikkonen, Button and Peréz were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was again fastest. Fernando Alonso , Daniel Ricciardo , Carlos Sainz jr. , Ericsson and Maldonado didn't make it into the last part of the timed practice.
The final section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Despite spinning the Castrol Edge on his last fast lap , Hamilton set the fastest time. Second was Rosberg, who braked himself on his last fast lap in the Red Bull Mobile . Vettel reached third place. Hamilton achieved his seventh pole position this year.
Several drivers received starting place penalties because they had already used more than four copies of the components of the engine unit this season. Ricciardo and Daniil Kwjat were moved back ten starting positions for the use of the fifth internal combustion engine, Alonso for the use of the fifth internal combustion engine, the turbocharger and the MGU-H by 20 positions, and Button for the use of the fifth internal combustion engine and the MGU -K and the sixth turbocharger and MGU-H by 25 positions. Since Alonso's gearbox was also changed after qualifying, he was moved back five places on the grid. Since Ricciardo, Alonso and Button were not fully relocated, Ricciardo received a five-second penalty that he had to serve at the first pit stop, Alonso a drive-through penalty and Button a ten-second stop-and-go penalty, both drivers had to compete in the first three laps of the race.
run
Rosberg started better than Hamilton and took the lead before the first corner. Behind them were Vettel, Felipe Massa , Hülkenberg, Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas . In the back of the field there was an accident between Alonso and Raikkonen on the first lap when Raikkonen lost control of his car while accelerating and collided with the Alonso driving next to him. The McLaren was maneuvered onto the Ferrari's nose and both vehicles slid along the lane. The race was over for both drivers and the safety car was sent out to rescue the vehicles . Kwjat damaged his vehicle nose and drove into the pits at the end of the first lap to have it changed.
The track was opened again at the end of the sixth lap. Ericsson received a drive-through penalty for a jump start and two penalty points. On lap 15 Bottas passed Verstappen and was now in sixth place. In the following laps he pulled away from Verstappen and caught up with Hulkenberg, whom he overtook on the 25th lap. Hülkenberg was then the first driver from the front field to pit to change tires. Bottas stopped a lap later and fell again behind Hülkenberg. Sainz received a drive-through penalty for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane.
At the end of the 33rd lap, Rosberg came into the pits to change tires, two laps later Hamilton also changed tires, Rosberg passed him again. Hamilton crossed the white line at the pit exit and received a five-second penalty. Meanwhile, Bottas overtook Hulkenberg again. Another lap later, Vettel drove to change tires, but the rear right wheel could not be changed fast enough, so that Vettel lost around ten seconds and fell behind Massa. After the pit stops, Rosberg was in front of Hamilton, Massa, Vettel, Bottas, Hülkenberg, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Maldonado and Felipe Nasr .
Grosjean had to give up the race with a gearbox failure. His team-mate Maldonado overtook Ricciardo shortly afterwards and was now in eighth place.
Vettel reduced the gap to Massa, but initially did not come within striking distance. Ricciardo changed tires again and was now outside the points. However, since he was driving the softer tire compound in the final phase, he drove significantly faster than the drivers in front of him. On the 62nd lap he overtook Nasr and was now in tenth place. Vettel had meanwhile caught up with Massa, but Williams was too fast on the straights so that he could not start a serious attack. Maldonado tried unsuccessfully for several rounds to get past Verstappen. With two laps to go, he finally managed to overtake the Toro Rosso driver.
Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Massa. It was the third win for Rosberg and the fifth one-two for Mercedes this season. Hamilton led a Grand Prix in this race for the 17th time in a row, equaling Jackie Stewart's record . Massa took his first podium since the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix . The top 10 completed Vettel, Bottas, Hülkenberg, Maldonado, Verstappen, Pérez and Ricciardo.
In the drivers 'and constructors' world championships, the first three positions remained unchanged.
