Reports
background
The same field of participants that had contested the Hungarian Grand Prix the previous weekend also competed in Austria.
training
Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position in front of his team-mate Nigel Mansell as well as Gerhard Berger and Thierry Boutsen . His team-mate Teo Fabi shared the third row with Michele Alboreto in the second Ferrari .
All pilots achieved their respective best times during the first qualifying training on Friday. With the wet track conditions on Saturday, no time improvements could be achieved.
Stefan Johansson had a serious accident after the suspension of his McLaren MP4 / 3 was damaged in the course of a collision with a deer. He got away with minor injuries.
run
Shortly after the start, Martin Brundle lost control of his car. He hit the barrier, from where the vehicle was thrown back onto the track. Several opponents collided during sudden evasive maneuvers, whereupon the race was stopped.
During the second attempt at take-off, accidents occurred again, which were triggered by the fact that both Mansell and Berger started very poorly, the following pilots ran into the duo and sometimes collided. The race was stopped again because the track was blocked.
Although a large number of pilots were involved in the collision, all drivers except Philippe Streiff were able to take part in the third attempt at take-off. However, some of them started in replacement vehicles from the pit lane. Alex Caffi stopped due to engine problems.
This time Senna got away from his starting position relatively poorly, but there was no new collision. Piquet took the lead ahead of Boutsen, Berger, Mansell and Fabi. When Boutsen and Berger retired after a few laps due to technical problems, Team Williams was in the lead . Fabi followed in third place.
In the course of lapping maneuvers, Mansell passed his team-mate to the top on lap 21. He quickly gained a head start so that he was able to defend the lead during his pit stop and finally to the finish. In the duel for fourth place behind Fabi, Senna and Alboreto collided, whereupon Senna had to have a new front wing fitted to the pits. As a result, he briefly fell back to ninth place, but made it back to fifth place by the end of the race and in this position reached the finish line behind Boutsen and in front of Prost. After the race, Brundle, who had been four laps back, was disqualified because the T-Car he had used when restarting did not meet the regulations.
Since the safety of the track was no longer considered to be up to date, there was no longer any Formula 1 race on the high-speed track. It was not until ten years later, after significant modifications had been carried out, particularly affecting the fast corners, that a Grand Prix was held again.
