Ildefonso-Manuel Gil

Ildefonso-Manuel Gil (born January 22, 1912 in Paniza , Campo de Cariñena , † April 28, 2003 in Saragossa ) was a Spanish poet, author, Romanist , Hispanist and Lusitanist .

life and work

As a poet, Gil belonged to the "generation of 1936". He did his PhD in Philology, went to the United States and taught (through the mediation of his friend Francisco Ayala ) from 1962 to 1982 at the City University of New York as a professor of Spanish. In 1983 he returned to Spain and lived in Saragossa.

In 2012 the University of Zaragoza organized a “Homenaje a Ildefonso Manuel Gil, con motivo del centenario de su nacimiento”. A street in Saragossa is named after him, as is a library.
