Reports
background
The Coloni team, which had made its debut in Italy two weeks earlier , did not take part in the Portugal GP. Otherwise, the field of participants was exactly the same as that in Monza.
training
Gerhard Berger demonstrated an upward trend at Ferrari by reaching the pole position. Nigel Mansell followed in second place on the grid, ahead of Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet, who led the world championship . Ayrton Senna and Michele Alboreto formed the third row in the second Ferrari.
run
While Mansell took the lead past Berger from second on the grid, Alboreto collided with Piquet. Derek Warwick spun in the course of an abrupt evasive maneuver, whereupon there was another collision between Satoru Nakajima and Martin Brundle , in which five other pilots were involved. Since the track was blocked by debris, the race was canceled.
With the exception of Christian Danner, all pilots in hastily repaired vehicles or T-cars were able to participate in the restart, which was carried out after the clean-up work . Mansell took the lead again, but lost this position to Berger on the second lap.
On lap 14, Mansell had to retire due to an engine failure. Piquet, who had previously overtaken Senna, thus became Berger's pursuer. Since Senna had to go to the pits due to an electronics problem, Alboreto took third place.
In the course of the pit stops, which most of the drivers made about halfway through the race, Alain Prost came in second, followed by Nelson Piquet and Teo Fabi . During the final laps, Prost caught up with the leading Berger and put him under pressure. In fact, he made a mistake and spun in the 68th of 70 laps. Prost passed and broke Jackie Stewart's previous record with his 28th Grand Prix victory . Berger was second ahead of Piquet and Fabi. Stefan Johansson crossed the finish line in fifth ahead of Eddie Cheever .
