Reports
background
Exactly six months to the day after the premiere last year , the second Portuguese Grand Prix took place as a Formula 1 World Championship round.
Shortly after the season opener in Brazil , René Arnoux was surprisingly dismissed from Scuderia Ferrari . Stefan Johansson was then hired as the new regular driver alongside Michele Alboreto after Ken Tyrrell and Stefan Bellof had agreed on a contract extension for his team.
The German racing team Zakspeed was present for the first time with Jonathan Palmer as the only driver. A Zakspeed 841 racing car , which had a four-cylinder turbo engine from its own production, was used. Thus Zakspeed was one of the few teams, alongside Ferrari and Renault , that manufactured their engines themselves.
training
Ayrton Senna secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career in the Lotus 97T . He relegated Alain Prost to second place on the grid, ahead of Keke Rosberg and Elio de Angelis in the second Lotus . Michele Alboreto and Derek Warwick formed the third row ahead of Niki Lauda and Andrea de Cesaris .
run
It rained throughout the day of the race. As a result, Nigel Mansell and Eddie Cheever had an accident during the warm-up laps , so that they had to start the race with their respective T-Cars from the pit lane.
Ayrton Senna defended his top position, which his team-mate de Angelis, who had started from fourth place, added a Lotus one-two lead before the first corner. Prost followed before Alboreto. Rosberg did not get off well from his starting position. Almost all opponents were able to avoid the Williams, however. However, Palmer easily collided with the almost stationary vehicle and had to give up at the end of the lap due to excessive damage to his Zakspeed.
It turned out that the Pirelli rain tires appeared to be inferior to those of their competitor Goodyear . Several well-known pilots fell behind hopelessly. The order of the first four drivers remained constant until lap 30, with Senna extending the lead over his second-placed team-mate in a remarkable way. Then Prost turned out and left Alboreto third in front of Patrick Tambay , Niki Lauda and Nigel Mansell.
On the 43rd lap, Alboreto passed de Angelis. In the final phase, he fell behind Tambay and was fourth ahead of Mansell and Bellof.
Ayrton Senna achieved his first Grand Prix victory with a lead of more than a minute over the runner-up. He also scored a Grand Slam .
