Friedrich Brockhaus (born September 23, 1800 in Dortmund , † August 24, 1865 in Dresden ) was a German bookseller and publisher in Leipzig . From 1823 to 1850 he ran the FA Brockhaus publishing house together with his brother Heinrich Brockhaus .

To person

Friedrich Brockhaus was born as the second child (and oldest son) of the publisher Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus and Sophie Brockhaus, b. Beurhaus, born. On June 16, 1828, he married Luise Wagner (* December 14, 1805; † January 2, 1872), a sister of the conductor and composer Richard Wagner , who earned pocket money in spring 1830 by correcting his brother-in-law. The marriage produced four daughters:

  • Marianne Luise (February 22, 1829 - January 3, 1919) ∞ Louis von Weltzien (April 1, 1815 - October 16, 1870)
  • Sophie Elisabeth (* May 23, 1830; † November 13, 1912) ∞ Adolf Schumann (* November 21, 1822; † August 4, 1907)
  • Clara (* February 25, 1833; † March 28, 1899) ∞ Kurt von Kessinger (* April 5, 1828; † November 22, 1914), royal Saxon major general
  • Ottilie (born August 14, 1836 - † November 2, 1903)

Publishing house management

After the death of his father, Friedrich and his younger brother Heinrich continued to run the FABrockhaus publishing house, which had already gained considerable influence at that time . Since there were no male descendants who would grow into the management of the family business, the brothers decided in 1850, with a severance payment, for Heinrich to rule and Friedrich to leave the publishing house. Friedrich Brockhaus moved to Dresden, where he died on August 24, 1865 at the age of 64.
