Reports
background
The Osella team only entered one vehicle in the third last race. The Larrousse team, on the other hand, was strengthened by signing the debutant Yannick Dalmas as the second driver alongside Philippe Alliot .
training
During the training there were several accidents, the cause of which was attributed to the undulating road surface. Among other things, Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna , who were in a promising position in the world championship standings, were involved in such accidents. Nevertheless, Mansell secured pole position from Gerhard Berger . Nelson Piquet and Thierry Boutsen formed the second row ahead of Alain Prost and Teo Fabi .
run
Due to a bad start, Mansell was overtaken by Berger, Boutsen, Piquet and Prost before the first corner. As a result of a collision with Piquet, Prost was eliminated. As a result, Mansell came in third. Another collision occurred a short time later between Stefan Johansson and Christian Danner , as a result of which both pilots were eliminated. Satoru Nakajima had to end his race prematurely after a collision with Derek Warwick .
In the second round, Boutsen managed to overtake Berger and thus take the lead. Due to engine problems, however, he lost this position again on lap 15 and had to give up the race shortly afterwards. Berger also retired six laps later, which meant that Mansell returned to the top position without a fight.
After a serious accident by Derek Warwick, the race was interrupted at the end of the 30th lap. After the clean-up work, a new starting line-up was formed, which was based on the order at the time the race was canceled. Piquet initially took the lead, but shortly afterwards had to leave it to Mansell, who ultimately won the race. Nelson Piquet finished second ahead of Riccardo Patrese , Eddie Cheever , Teo Fabi and Philippe Alliot .
