Reports
background
The teams entered the Austrian Grand Prix with several changes in terms of the driver line-up. Jean-Pierre Jabouille was hired by Surtees to replace Jochen Mass . This had terminated his contract with the team as well as the main sponsor Bang & Olufsen . Mike Hailwood had to end his Formula 1 career two weeks earlier after his serious accident at the German Grand Prix . His compatriot David Hobbs took his place in the third factory McLaren . At Team Ensign , Vern Schuppan was replaced by Mike Wilds and Rolf Stommelen took over the second Lola in Graham Hill's team to replace the injured Guy Edwards .
With Dieter Quester in a third factory Surtees with his own main sponsor and the Formula 1 newcomer Helmut Koinigg in the private Brabham BT42 of the Scuderia Finotto, two local guest starters completed the entry list. In addition, the Hesketh team exceptionally reported a second car, which was driven by Ian Scheckter , Jody Scheckter's brother .
Due to delivery bottlenecks, the BRM team did not have enough spare engine parts available and therefore only entered one vehicle instead of the usual three.
training
For the fifth time in a row, Niki Lauda secured pole position in a Ferrari 312B3 . Carlos Reutemann took second place on the front row. It was followed by Emerson Fittipaldi and Carlos Pace in the second row and Jody Scheckter and Ronnie Peterson in row three.
Jacky Ickx once again had problems with the new Lotus 76 and only achieved 22nd place on the grid. Among the six pilots who failed to qualify for the starting field limited to 25 participants were three of the four participating Surtees TS16 as well as Mike Wilds and the two debutants Ian Scheckter and Helmut Koinigg.
run
Reutemann took the lead right at the start of the race and never gave it up until the finish. Lauda followed before Pace, Clay Regazzoni , James Hunt , Jody Scheckter, Emerson Fittipaldi and Arturo Merzario . Peterson was only ninth after a bad start, but quickly caught up with Merzario.
During the first laps, Regazzoni overtook Pace and Scheckter passed Hunt. On the ninth lap, Scheckter overtook fourth-placed Pace, but was eliminated shortly afterwards due to an engine failure. In the course of the following laps, Fittipaldi and Peterson first overtook Hunt and shortly afterwards Pace. Meanwhile, Lauda fell back due to misfiring and had to admit defeat first Regazzoni and a little later also Fittipaldi, Peterson and Pace. Shortly thereafter, he was eliminated from the race entirely. Due to a small driving error, Peterson lost his fourth place in pace around halfway through the race.
On the 38th lap, Fittipaldi retired due to an engine problem. Shortly afterwards, a puncture threw Regazzoni back, so another title contender was deprived of a realistic chance of victory. Pace and Peterson initially benefited from this, but were eliminated a little later due to technical problems.
In the end, Denis Hulme finished second behind the winner Reutemann, ahead of Hesketh regular drivers James Hunt and John Watson in the private Brabham. Regazzoni was the only one of the title favorites to score two points in fifth, with which he was able to slightly extend his lead in the world championship standings. In sixth place, Vittorio Brambilla received the last World Championship point of the day, which was also the first point in his GP career for him.
