Reports
background
In the roughly two months between the Brazilian Grand Prix and the third World Cup round of the year in South Africa, two Formula 1 races that were not part of the World Cup took place. The local Emerson Fittipaldi finished the Grande Prêmio Presidente Medici in Brasília victoriously, while Jacky Ickx won the "Race of Champions" at Brands Hatch . Shortly afterwards, some of the Formula 1 teams met for test drives in the run-up to the South African GP at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit . In the process, Peter Revson was killed when his Shadow Ford crashed headlong into the lane as a result of a damaged suspension. The Shadow team then withdrew the notification of participation in the Grand Prix and left.
Traditionally, the field of participants in South Africa was supplemented by a few local guest starters. Dave Charlton and Eddie Keizan have already taken part in the race in privately used vehicles several times. It was a first for Paddy Driver and Ian Scheckter , the brother of Tyrrell factory driver Jody Scheckter . Driver had already qualified for this Grand Prix once in 1963 , but was unable to start because of damage to his Lotus 24 .
Vittorio Brambilla , who replaced Howden Ganley as March factory driver, also made his first GP participation this weekend .
The second works car of Frank Williams' team was rented to Tom Belsø for this race .
Hesketh Racing no longer competed as a March customer team, but for the first time with the first racing car developed by the team itself. Lotus also appeared with a new development, the Type 76 , which was to replace the Type 72 after more than four years of service. BRM also launched a copy of a new vehicle called the P201 . Jean-Pierre Beltoise drove the car, while the other two works drivers Henri Pescarolo and François Migault continued to drive the tried and tested P160E .
training
Niki Lauda achieved the fastest training time in the Ferrari 312B3 and thus the first pole position of his Grand Prix career. Surtees drivers Carlos Pace and Arturo Merzario on Iso-Marlboro impressed the professional world by finishing in second and third on the grid. It was followed by Carlos Reutemann's Brabham in front of Emerson Fittipaldi's McLaren M23 and Clay Regazzoni's second Ferrari . Hans-Joachim Stuck achieved a convincing seventh place in the Werks-March ahead of Jody Scheckter on Tyrrell. McLaren driver Denis Hulme and Jacky Ickx in the new Lotus 76 completed the top ten, while the second Lotus works driver Ronnie Peterson only managed to finish 16th due to difficulties with the new car.
run
From pole position, Lauda initially took the lead ahead of Reutemann, who had accelerated Pace and Merzario. Jody Scheckter and Clay Regazzoni followed. Meanwhile, a collision occurred in midfield, in which both Lotus factory drivers were involved. Peterson was eliminated on the second lap due to consequential damages, Ickx had a brake defect later in the race that forced him to give up. Also in the start phase there was a collision between Henri Pescarolo and Jochen Mass . The latter retired after eleven laps due to suspension damage as a result of the collision.
In the tenth lap, Reutemann took the lead and pulled away from the rest of the field. Behind them the order of the pursuers only changed due to James Hunt's retirement on lap 14 and Scheckter falling back due to tire problems and otherwise remained constant for several laps.
On lap 49, Mike Hailwood managed to overtake Fittipaldi and thereby take fourth place. Shortly afterwards, however, both were overtaken by Beltoise.
On lap 66 Regazzoni had to retire due to an engine problem. Lauda's second Ferrari followed nine laps later due to similar damage. Reutemann finally won ahead of Beltoise and Hailwood, who each reached the podium in a Grand Prix for the last time. In fifth place, Stuck received the first two World Championship points of his Formula 1 career.
It was the first Grand Prix victory of Argentine since the Grand Prix of Germany 1957 , the Juan Manuel Fangio had won, and the first win for the team Brabham since the last success of the team's founder Jack Brabham at the Grand Prix of South Africa 1970 .
