Peter Jeffrey Revson (born February 27, 1939 in New York , † March 22, 1974 in Kyalami , South Africa ) was an American racing car driver . He was the son of Charles Revson , one of the founders of the Revlon cosmetics company .

Racing career

The McLaren Offenhauser with which Peter Revson contested the Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1973

Revson contested his first races in the 1964 automobile world championship with a Lotus - BRM. His best result after four starts was 13th place in the Italian Grand Prix . At the Monaco Grand Prix he failed to qualify and at the French Grand Prix he had to give his car to Mike Hailwood before the race .

Then Revson drove back to the American continent in various racing series (Can-Am, Trans-Am and others). His greatest success during this time was second place in the Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1971 in a McLaren - Offenhauser behind his compatriot Al Unser .

Revson had his next use in the automobile world championship in 1971 for Tyrrell at the US Grand Prix . He retired on the first lap with a damaged clutch in his Tyrrell 001 .

Two successful years for Revson in the McLaren team followed in 1972 and 1973 . Revson achieved a total of 61 championship points in 23 starts for McLaren. His best placings were two wins (at the British Grand Prix and the Canadian Grand Prix in 1973) as well as two second and four third places. He finished fifth in the drivers' championship in both seasons.

After failing to cross the finish line in two races for Shadow in 1974 due to technical problems, he had a fatal accident during test drives for the South African Grand Prix in Kyalami . The cause of the accident was a suspension defect on his Shadow DN3 .
