An Offenhauser Midget racing car

Offenhauser was an American race car - engine manufacturer .

The company was founded by Fred Offenhauser in 1933 and initially built engines for " midgets ", ie small separation cars. In 1946 the three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Louis Meyer took over the business and continued it with great success. The construction as a monoblock engine was remarkable, which allowed higher mean pressures without a cylinder head gasket . A vehicle powered by this engine, often abbreviated to “Offy” in parlance, won the Indianapolis 500 no less than 27 times , including all eleven races that were part of the World Automobile Championship (1950–1960). The most successful team was the American Kurtis Kraft team.
