Brands Hatch 6 Hours 1969
The 1969 Brands Hatch 6-hour race , also known as the BOAC International 500 World Championship Sportscar Race, Brands Hatch , took place on April 13 at Brands Hatch and was the third round of the World Sports Car Championship of that year.
Before the race
The team responsible for Porsche witnessed a debacle when the Porsche 908 was first used at the season opening race, the Daytona 24-hour race . All five works cars that started were canceled due to various technical problems. Also in the 12-hour race at Sebring remained Porsche team without total victory. For the race at Brands Hatch, Porsche race director Rico Steinemann registered four new Porsche 908/02 with Spyder body for the driver pairings Jo Siffert / Brian Redman , Vic Elford / Richard Attwood , Gerhard Mitter / Udo Schütz and Hans Herrmann / Rolf Stommelen .
Daytona surprising that of winning Roger Penske reported Lola T70 Mk.3B GT by Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons . At Brands Hatch there were seven T70 MK.3 GT on the entry list, all of which started in the sports car class up to 5 liters, including the Scuderia Filipinetti -T70 from Jo Bonnier and Herbert Müller , the car from David Piper with teammate Roy Pierpoint and Paul Hawkins with partner Jonathan Williams .
The John Wyer - Ford GT40 of Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver won in Sebring . Wyer reported a GT40 for David Hobbs and Mike Hailwood and the new Mirage M2 / 300 for Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver. The M2 was the first completely new design by the Wyer team, as the M1 was a converted GT40. The design work came from Len Terry and the 3-liter V12 engine from BRM . The Ferrari 312P had already made a successful debut . The new Scuderia prototype was used for the first time in the Sebring 12-hour race. Chris Amon and Mario Andretti drove the 312P to second place in the overall standings. At Brands Hatch there was only one 312P at the start, driven by Chris Amon and Pedro Rodríguez . For the first time since the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps in 1968 , Alan Mann Racing fielded two now detail-improved Ford F3L P68s . In addition to Frank Gardner , the two former Formula 1 world champions Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme were part of the racing team.
The race
The fastest practice time was achieved by Jo Siffert in the Porsche 908/02 with starting number 53. The pole position time was 1: 28.800 minutes. Next to them in the front row were Chris Amon's Ferrari, who was only 2/10 seconds slower than Siffert in the Porsche in the last practice session, and Jo Bonnier's Lola. After the end of the training, only an iron barrier prevented another Porsche debacle. The Ford GT40 of Helmut Kelleners and Reinhold Joest rolled unoccupied in the paddock towards the four parked and covered Porsches before it was stopped by the cordon.
This time the Porsche couldn't be beaten in the race. In addition to the advantages on the track, the team also had the better pit strategy. In order to shorten the refueling with cans, the mechanics used a large funnel for filling. When the tank was full, the excess fuel ran through a pipe into a canister. Porsche celebrated a triple victory in front of the works 312P. Ferrari had to make a few unscheduled pit stops, once because of a puncture. The first use of the Mirage M2 ended after 88 laps due to a defect in the drive shaft. Of the two Ford F3L P69s, only one was able to start the race. Jack Brabham's car had an engine failure before the race, the second vehicle had to be parked after a short race due to lack of oil pressure. Jo Bonnier had a serious accident in the last third of the race in which he was uninjured. As the cause of the accident was not clear, the T70s of David Piper and Trevor Taylor were withdrawn from the race.
