David Prophet (born October 9, 1937 Hong Kong , † March 29, 1981 near Silverstone ) was a British racing car driver .
Career
David Prophet raced cars for a decade. He had already earned his first spurs in Formula Junior when he took part in the Formula 1 Grand Prix in South Africa in 1963 with his Brabham BT6 . Prophet dropped out prematurely after persistent problems with oil pressure. Around the same time he also took part in the Rand Grand Prix , which he finished in sixth, and the Grand Prix of Rhodesia , where he drove his Brabham to second place.
Between 1964 and 1967 he competed regularly in Formula 2 races, albeit with modest success. He was more successful in the sports car. He drove a Lotus 30 , Ford GT40 and Lola T70 in national sports car races in the UK and selected events in the World Sports Car Championship .
In 1970 he contested a complete Formula 5000 season with a McLaren M10 B. In 1971 he retired from racing. He had a fatal accident ten years later: the helicopter with which Prophet left the Silverstone race track after an event crashed shortly after take-off.
