Monza 1000 km race in 1967

Lorenzo Bandini in the Ferrari 330P4

The sixth 1000 km race of Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1967 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the third race of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

In Monzo, the entire route including the banked curves was driven. This resulted in a lap length of 10.100 km. The last monopostor races on this track variant were contested at the end of the 1950s, then this track variant was not used for safety reasons. Even in the sports car world championship after 1969, the almost unsecured banked curves were over.

The race in Monza was the third round of the sports car world championship in 1967 . The opening race of the season, the 24 Hours of Daytona ended with an overall victory of Lorenzo Bandini and Chris Amon on a plant - Ferrari 330P4 . Bruce McLaren and Mario Andretti , who drove the Ford Motor Company's new prototype , the Ford Mk.IV , are victorious in the subsequent Sebring 12-hour race . In Monza, the Ford works teams from Shelby American and Holman & Moody decided not to participate in the race in order not to have to interrupt the test work for the Le Mans 24-hour race .

Thus the Ferrari works cars were as good as without any opponents in the race. The fastest car in training, the Chaparral 2F , soon broke down after a technical defect. After almost 5 hours of racing time - which made the race one of the fastest 1000 km races in motorsport history - Lorenzo Bandini and Chris Amon won ahead of their teammates Mike Parkes and Ludovico Scarfiotti .

Almost three years would pass before Scuderia was able to win another championship race in the World Sports Car Championship with overall victory in the Sebring 12-hour race .
