The Philosophers - Who Will Survive? (Original title: After the Dark ) is an American science fiction film directed by John Huddles from 2013. The film was made in collaboration with the production studios An Olive Branch Productions and SCTV. The film is about a thought experiment by philosophy students that gets out of hand. The film premiered at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival 2013.

action

The students of an international school for the gifted in Jakarta are about to graduate. Your philosophy teacher Mr. Zimit invites the 20 students to a final thought experiment: they should imagine that a nuclear catastrophe would trigger the apocalypse . The last chance would be a bunker that would protect the survivors for a year. The only problem is that it is only enough for ten people. Mr. Zimit gives his class the task of deciding for themselves who is allowed into the bunker. To do this, the students randomly choose professions that are supposed to help them make rational decisions. But the students are put to a tough test and the experiment quickly gains critical momentum. The first run of the experiment fails because Mr. Zimit was excluded from the bunker after a purely emotional decision and the occupants cannot leave the bunker because he was the only one who knew the code for the exit door of the bunker. In the second attempt, Zimit opens the bunker door while the world is radioactive, killing the inmates. The reason for his decision was that those present refused to sleep with everyone else in order to ensure the continued existence of mankind. In the third run, Petra takes over the lead of the experiment. She chooses the apparently useless professions on her own. But this is how the group manages to bridge the time through entertainment and to survive. After a “short but powerful” life, they choose to commit suicide to avoid starvation. In the closing sequences, Petra, who had a secret relationship with Zimit, comes up with three scenarios of what Zimit does now; in one scenario he commits suicide after she ended the affair to go to a prestigious college with friend James.

Reviews

“Ambitious sci-fi thriller drama in a beautiful setting and exotic backdrops. Not an action film, even if Endzeit is on the program, rather a philosophical thought game that is illustrated as if it were a real struggle for survival. In halftime 2, the survival aspect moves more and more into the background, and it turns into a relationship drama. Still ideally suited for SF fans looking for a sophisticated alternative. From the Fantasy Film Festival. "

“(...) Everything in this film is so nicely draped, the actors so beautiful and smooth, the bunker so perfect and sterile that the oppressive, the abysses and depths of human activity simply cannot arise. So not only the thought experiment, but also the cinematic experiment remains superficial. "
