Monza 360 km race 1986

Track layout 1986

The 27th 1000 km race in Monza , also Coppa Kouros, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place as a 360 km race on April 20, 1986 at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year .

The race

The Monza 1000 km race was run as a sprint race in 1986 and was only part of the drivers' championship and not that year's World Championship. The race distance of 360 kilometers was only 64 kilometers longer than the distance at the Italian Grand Prix , which also took place in 1986 at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. With a driving time of just under two hours, the respective drivers of the teams of two had to spend less than an hour in the cockpit. The only exception was the Greek Costas Los , who drove a March 84G to 13th place overall. In contrast to such a sprint race, the race distance of the brand world championship races was at least 1000 kilometers.

The race won Hans-Joachim Stuck and Derek Bell in the plant - Porsche 962 . Andrea de Cesaris and Alessandro Nannini in the Lancia LC2 were surprisingly second overall . Despite some revisions, the vehicle concept of the LC2, first driven in 1983, was out of date. On the fast track in Monza, the powerful 308C 3-liter V8 engine from Ferrari helped the Lancia, which meant that de Cesaris and Nannini could easily drive with the newer Porsche racing cars. Jaguar experienced a total failure after both XJR-6s had to be shut down after technical defects.
