Jerez 360 km race in 1986

The third-placed Jaguar XJR-6 by Derek Warwick and Jan Lammers

The 360 km race in Jerez 1986 , also known as Trofeo Silk Cut, Jerez , took place on August 3 at the Circuito de Jerez and was the sixth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

A starter mistake triggered a chain reaction that led to a collision of all three factory Jaguars on the first lap. The pace car led the field, followed by Walter Brun , who started from pole position in a Porsche 956 , through the introductory lap back to the start-and-finish straight. Brun drove slowly in third gear and waited for the go-ahead to be released. Although the light was still red, the three Jaguar drivers Gianfranco Brancatelli , Eddie Cheever and Derek Warwick Brun overtook Brun before the start line. As it turned out after the race, a local official prevented the American starter's attempt to break off by illegally switching the traffic light to green. That caused irritation in the field. While Brancatelli took a short break from the accelerator while in the lead, Warwick, who was following him, drove into his car on the first corner and spun off the track. Eddie Cheever couldn't avoid it and also collided with Brancatelli. While Warwick was able to restart the Jaguar's dead engine after two laps and follow the field, the other two Jaguars had to head for the pits to repair the bodies. As the race went on, both cars retired due to drive shaft defects.

Derek Warwick was able to continue the race and achieved third place with partner Jan Lammers , thus maintaining his chances of winning the driver's world title. After the debacle in Tom Walkinshaw's team , the Brun- Porsches remained safe. Oscar Larrauri and Jesús Pareja won in the Porsche 962C ahead of team owner Walter Brun and Frank Jelinski in the 956. Gordon Spice and Ray Bellm in the Spice SE86C remained successful in the C2 class .
