The 1986 World Sports Car Championship was the 34th season of this championship. It started on April 20th and ended on October 5th.

championship

In 1986, the years of hegemony of the Porsche works team in the sports car world championship came to an end. In addition to the in-house competition that the works team grew up with from Brun and Joest's racing teams , there were new, equally competitive Group C vehicles on the racetracks. Since 1982 , Lancia had been the only opponent with the LC2 to win against the Porsche models Porsche 956 and 962 . 1985 saw the addition of the Sauber C8 and the Jaguar XJR-6 . The Sauber C8 was the successor to the unsuccessful C7 and the first Sauber racing car with a Mercedes engine . The Jaguar XJR-6, which made its racing debut in 1985, was developed by Tom Walkinshaw and is powered by a 6.5-liter V12 engine .

Since the previous year , there has been no manufacturer rating in the brand world championship. The racing team with the most championship points became world champions. This further intensified the competition between the Porsche teams, which Brun won by four points ahead of Joest at the end of the year. The Porsche team retained the prestigious success at the Le Mans 24-hour race and the drivers' title. Jaguar and Sauber each achieve a win of the season. Derek Warwick and Eddie Cheever won the home race at Silverstone in the XJR-6 and Sauber was successful in the rainy 1000 km race at the Nürburgring .

The drivers' world championship ended very close. The two Porsche works drivers and team partners Derek Bell and Hans-Joachim Stuck achieved the same number of points in the championship with 82 points. Decisive for the title was their participation in the 200-mile race in Nuremberg , a race without changing drivers. Derek Bell finished the race in eleventh place while Stuck was only fifteenth. Although there were no championship points for either driver (these were only awarded to the top ten), Bell finished eleventh to the title. Jaguar driver Derek Warwick finished third in the World Championship, just one point behind.
