Stanislaw Adamczewski

Stanisław Adamczewski (born December 11, 1883 in Warsaw , † August 2, 1952 in Opacz in the Konstancin-Jeziorna municipality ) was a Polish literary historian , literary critic and editor who dealt scientifically in particular with the works of Stefan Żeromski and the poetry of the Polish Baroque busy and edited several works by Jan Kochanowski .

Life

Adamczewski attended school in Warsaw and Płock , where he graduated from grammar school in 1903. He then began studying medicine in Tartu , which he broke off in 1904. In Warsaw he gave private lessons from 1905 to 1907 and passed the state teacher examination. He then worked as a Polish teacher at private schools in Łęczyca (1907 to 1908), Siedlce (1908 to 1909) and Lublin (1909 to 1911).

As a literary critic he made his debut in 1910 with the essay Znaczenie i przeznaczenie twórczości Wyspiańskiego w naszym życiu , which appeared in the Lubelski Courier . From 1911 to 1914 he studied in Zurich , Paris and Lwów . After the outbreak of the First World War he returned to Warsaw and worked as a Polish teacher at high schools. At the University of Warsaw he received his doctorate in 1923 with the thesis Oblicze poetyckie Bartłomieja Zimorowicza and in 1926 became a member of the commission for the study of the literary and educational history of the Warsaw Science Society . From 1928 to 1930 he also edited numerous texts for school use in the Wielka Biblioteka series . In 1932, he regularly published his literary and theater reviews in the weekly Kultura.

In 1935 he completed his habilitation in the field of Polish literary history at the University of Poznan and lectured at the University of Warsaw from 1936. In addition, from 1935 he was a member of the Commission for Polish Literary History at the Polska Akademia Umiejętności and in October 1936 took over the management of the State Institute for Theater Arts ( Państwowy Instytut Sztuki Teatralnej ) in Warsaw. He also worked for Polskie Radio as a reviewer for book publications.

During the occupation of Poland, he stayed in Warsaw and gave lessons underground. After the Warsaw Uprising he lived in Zakopane for six months and from April 1945 in Krakow . There he lectured at the Jagiellonian University and also taught at the grammar school. In the same year he moved to Łódź and took over the chair of Polish literary history at the University of Łódź as an ordinary professor . He was also elected in 1946 as an active member of the Polska Akademia Umiejętności. In the Biblioteka Pisarzy Polskich i Obcych series , he published many edited texts. Adamczewski retired in 1950 and lived in Opacz near Warsaw. After the death of Wacław Borowy , he took over the editorial work on Stefan Żeromski's diaries.

Adamczewski committed suicide on August 2, 1952.
