The 1961 World Sports Car Championship was the ninth season of this championship. It began on March 25th and ended on August 15th, 1961.

In 1961 Ferrari was safe in the championship and reached the sixth brand world championship since the championship was introduced in 1953 . The Scuderia won three races, the Sebring 12 hour race , the Targa Florio and the Le Mans 24 hour race . When 4-hour race at Pescara of the remained Scuderia Centro Sud reported Ferrari 250TRI of Lorenzo Bandini and Giorgio Scarlatti victorious.

Only in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring was there no overall Ferrari victory; there Masten Gregory and Lloyd Casner won in the Maserati Tipo 61 .
