The 1985 Sports Car World Championship was the 33rd season of this championship. It started on April 14th and ended on December 1st.

Two fatal accidents overshadowed the 1985 World Championship season. Within three weeks, the two then current German Formula 1 racing drivers had an accident in sports car races. Manfred Winkelhock was stuck in the wreck of his Kremer - Porsche 962C for 40 minutes during the 1000 km race in Mosport after he crashed into a boundary wall at high speed. Despite three hours of emergency surgery in a Toronto hospital , he died the following day. Three weeks later, Stefan Bellof had an accident in the Brun - Porsche 956B after a failed attempt to overtake at the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps . Bellof died at the scene of the accident after driving head-on into a concrete pillar in the Eau Rouge .

In 1985, Porsche was the dominant manufacturer too , with the Porsche 956 and 962C models . The 962C was the result of the agreement between the FIA and the IMSA on joint technical regulations. The 956 did not conform to US rules on two counts. For safety reasons, the IMSA required pedals behind the front axle, which Porsche met with a longer wheelbase. The aluminum monocoque was also reinforced by a steel roll cage . In addition, the water-cooled twin-turbo engine had to limit costs of 956 by the time-tested from the Porsche 935 -derived air-cooled engine with single turbocharger to be replaced, but but no consumption restriction as in was World Sportscar Championship for Group C .

Seven of the nine championship races ended with an overall Porsche victory. Exceptions were the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps, where Lancia clinched the only win of the season, and the 1000 km race at Fuji . Due to heavy rain, the racing conditions at Fuji Speedway were so bad that almost all non-Japanese teams were forced to retire after a few laps. When the race stopped after 2 hours of racing, the March 85G led the Hohshino team, which was declared the winning team by the race management.

The team championship, which was advertised for the first time, was won by the Porsche works team , with drivers Hans-Joachim Stuck and Derek Bell becoming world champions.
