Medieval mikveh (Montpellier)
The Medieval Mikveh in Montpellier , a town in the Hérault department of the Occitania region , was built in the first quarter of the 13th century. The mikvah in the Rue de la Barralerie Nos. 1, the former Jewish quarter is as since 2002 Monument historique classified and can be visited.
The limestone mikveh , which can be reached via 15 steps, belonged to the first synagogue in Montpellier, first mentioned in 1201 and used until 1365. The underground space is covered by a barrel vault and has several openings with a central column ( biforium ).
