Monza 1000 km race in 1970
The ninth 1000 km race in Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Trofeo Filippo Caracciolo, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1970 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fourth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
The collaboration between the Porsche racing department and John Wyer’s racing team began with the Daytona 24-hour race . The first time the Porsche 917 was driven by David Yorke , it was a double victory. Pedro Rodríguez , Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman were the overall winners. The following Sebring 12-hour race saw Scuderia Ferrari's first victory in a sports car world championship race since the success of Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini in the Ferrari 330P4 at the Monza 1000 km race in 1967 . Ignazio Giunti , Nino Vaccarella and Mario Andretti won in the Ferrari 512S just ahead of a Porsche 908/02 driven by Peter Revson and American actor Steve McQueen . The first world championship run in Europe was the 1000 km race at Brands Hatch , where the Wyer team won the second season with their Porsche 917. Pedro Rodríguez and Leo Kinnunen celebrated their second win of the season.
The race
In the weeks leading up to the race in Monza, tensions arose in the collaboration between Ferdinand Piëch and John Wyer. Before the start of the season, Wyer had assumed that it would be the only team to do the Porsche works. Louise Piëch , the mother of Ferdinand Piëch and owner of Porsche Holding in Salzburg , had already built up an independent Porsche team at the end of the 1969 season . In 1970, Porsche Salzburg, like John Wyer Automotive, also used two Porsche 917s and received extensive technical support from Porsche in Zuffenhausen . In the weeks leading up to the race in Monza, John Horsman , technical director at Wyer, had new Girling brake discs and pads tested on the cars. For such tests and changes to the car, the Wyer team management had to obtain the approval of Piëch, who also gave it in this case. Since the Girling products significantly improved the braking behavior of the two Wyer 917 chassis, they were built into the vehicles for the race in Monza. To the annoyance of the Wyer team management, the Porsche Salzburg 917 in Monza also had new Girling brake discs and pads. Another point of contention was the new 4.9-liter engine, which Piëch only offered exclusively to John Wyer, but which was also installed in both Porsche Salzburg 917s in Monza.
Wyer registered the driver pairings Pedro Rodríguez / Leo Kinnunen and Jo Siffert / Brian Redman for the two 917s. The Porsche Salzburg cars were driven by Kurt Ahrens , Vic Elford , Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood . On the grid, three further Porsche 917 were Jürgen Neuhaus and Helmut Kelleners drove one from the German Gesipa Racing Team Finnish reported 917. For Racing Team AAW went Hans Laine and Gijs van Lennep in the race. David Piper reported his 917 for himself and Tony Adamowicz .
The Scuderia Ferrari announced three Ferrari 512 . On the weekend before the 1000 km race, Ferrari number 1 driver Jacky Ickx had a serious accident at the Spanish Grand Prix . In the first round Ickx collided to a suspension damage to Ferrari 312B with the BRM P153 of Jackie Oliver . Both cars went up in flames and the light burns Jacky Ickx had suffered on his hands forced him to pause. His substitute was John Surtees . At that time, Surtees was the last Ferrari Formula 1 driver world champion to win the 1964 title for the Scuderia. After many disagreements with Enzo Ferrari and Ferrari racing directors, especially Eugenio Dragoni , he left the team in an argument in 1966. His partner on his return to Monza was Peter Schetty . The other two factory 512S were driven by Ignazio Giunti , Nino Vaccarella , Chris Amon and Arturo Merzario . There were also the Scuderia-Filipinetti -512S from Mike Parkes and Herbert Müller and the 512S from Corrado Manfredini and Giampiero Moretti .
From the start, the dispute between Porsche and Ferrari , which the experts expected, developed . In the slipstream, the two Wyer-Porsche 917s, driven by Rodríguez and Siffert, and the three works-512S with Giunti, Amon and Surtees quickly moved away from the rest of the field. In the eighth lap, Vic Elford in the Porsche-Salzburg-917 caught up with the quintet in front of him and took second place behind Jo Siffert on the tenth lap. Third was Ignazio Giunti in the best Ferrari. Jo Siffert lost the opportunity to win the race on the eleventh lap when he crashed into a guardrail while lapping a GT car in the first Lesmo bend. The front right wishbone was damaged. After a slow drive to the pits and the subsequent repairs, the car came back on the track more than ten laps behind and was behind in the overall standings without a chance.
At half time, Kurt Ahrens was leading five seconds ahead of Rodríguez's team-mate Leo Kinnunen in the Porsche 917. On lap 92, Ahrens had a puncture on the right rear of the Curva Grande. Although he was able to avoid an accident and drive slowly to the pits, the damage to the suspension was so great that the car had to be taken out of the race. Ferrari lost the possible overall victory due to a fire when refueling the 512S of Chris Amon and Arturo Merzario. The fire was extinguished, but the team lost three laps. At the finish, Pedro Rodríguez and Leo Kinnunen in their Porsche 917 had a lead of 1 minute and 25 seconds over the Ferrari of Ignazio Giunti, Nino Vaccarella and Chris Amon, who drove the last section of this car's race.
