1983 Monza 1000 km race
The 24th 1000 km race of Monza , also Trofeo Filippo Caracciolo, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 10, 1983 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
With the 1000 km race in Monza in April 1983, the sports car world championship of that year began, which included seven races and ended in December with the 1000 km race in Kyalami . The Porsche 956 , developed in 1982, were also given to customer teams at the beginning of the season, for which Porsche built new vehicles. In addition to the two factory 956s, five other vehicles of this Porsche type were at the start in Monza. A new development brought Lancia to Northern Italy. The Lancia LC2 replaced the LC1 and made its racing debut in Monza. Piercarlo Ghinzani destroyed the car he shared with Teo Fabi in the first practice session, but qualified the replacement car for pole position with a time of 1: 35.860 minutes . He was almost a second faster than Bob Wollek in the 956 from Joest Racing . The starting field for the world championship run was modest with 20 vehicles. However, the organizer filled it up with vehicles from Group 6, which ran for the Italian sports car championship, but were not rated in the world championship. This means that 27 vehicles entered the race on Sunday.
Piercarlo Ghinzani took the lead and kept it until he retired on lap 24. A puncture had destroyed the rear suspension and the Italian had to give up. This led to a duel between the Joest Porsche owned by Bob Wollek and Thierry Boutsen and the works Porsche owned by Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass , which was decided in favor of the Joest team just before the end.
