Life

He was the eldest son of Edward Stanley, 4th Baron Sheffield , from his marriage to Mary Katherine Bell, daughter of Sir Isaac Bell, 1st Baronet. He attended Eton College , graduated in 1902, a law degree at Balliol College of Oxford University as a Master of Arts and was the Inner Temple as a barrister admitted. As a captain in the British Army , he fought in the Second Boer War in South Africa. In 1905 he married Margaret Evelyn Evans Gordon. From 1906 to 1910 he was a member of the House of Commons as a Liberal Party MP for the Eddisbury constituency in Cheshire .

The Colonial Office rejected his request, however, and he remained in office until January 30, 1920.

After his term, he returned briefly in 1923 to Australia and became director of the National Bank of Australasia and of the Australian Mercantile Land and Finance Co . In the same year he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons. When his father died in 1925, he inherited his nobility titles 5th Baron Sheffield , 5th Baron Stanley of Alderley , 4th Baron Eddisbury and 11th Baronet, of Alderley Hall, and became a member of the House of Lords . He died of a bacterial infection on August 22, 1931 after an operation. He left three daughters and two sons.
