Sir Charles Henry Darling , KCB (born February 19, 1809 in Annapolis Royal , Nova Scotia , Canada , † January 25, 1870 in Cheltenham , Gloucestershire , England ) was a British colonial administrator .

biography

Charles Darling came from a family of colonial administrators. His maternal grandfather, Charles Cameron, was governor of the Bahamas . His father, Henry Charles Darling, was governor of Tobago , while his uncle, Sir Ralph Darling, was governor of Mauritius and New South Wales .

Charles Darling became governor of Barbados in 1841 . He was later from 1848 to 1852 Lieutenant Governor (Lieutenant Governor) of Saint Lucia , before he was from 1852 to 1855 Deputy Governor and as such in 1854 acting Governor of the Cape Colony . The town of Darling in South Africa , founded in 1853, was named in his honor.

Between 1855 and 1857 he was first Governor of Newfoundland and then until 1862 Governor of Jamaica . For his services he was in 1862 by Queen Victoria for Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath made.

Most recently he was Governor of Victoria from September 1863 to May 1866 .
