Henry Winneke

Sir Henry Arthur Winneke (born October 20, 1908 in Melbourne , Australia , † December 28, 1985 ) was Chairman of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Governor of Victoria.

Life

Winneke was born in 1908 as the son of a judge with German roots, Henry Christian Winneke , in the Melbourne district of Fitzroy North . In 1930 he graduated from the University of Melbourne with a master's degree in law. From 1931 he worked as a barrister . At the outbreak of World War II in 1939, he joined the Royal Australian Air Force . In 1941 he was promoted to Group Captain ( Colonel ).

After 1945 Winneke resumed his work as a barrister. In 1949 he was appointed Crown Attorney , two years later Solicitor-General of Victoria. In 1964 he was finally appointed Chairman of the Supreme Court of Victoria. In 1974 he resigned after being offered the position as Governor of Victoria. He held this office until 1982.

Winneke was married twice and had two sons.
