Davis McCaughey

John Davis McCaughey (born July 12, 1914 in Belfast , United Kingdom , † March 25, 2005 in Melbourne , Australia ) was a professor of theology and governor of the Australian state of Victoria .

Life

1941 McCaughey became the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland ordained . In the following ten years he also worked in the British Council of Churches . In 1953 he emigrated with his family to Australia, where he was offered a professorship in New Testament at the University of Melbourne . From 1978 to 1979 he was Deputy Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. McCaughey also campaigned for the establishment of La Trobe University .

McCaughey was also a driving force behind the founding of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977, which brought together Presbyterian and Methodist churches. He was the main author of the Basis of Union , which formed the basis for the union of the various currents. McCaughey was the first President of the Uniting Church from 1977 to 1979.

At the age of 71, he was named governor of Victoria in 1986 and remained so until 1992. During his tenure, he was described as down-to-earth; So he swapped his company car, a Rolls-Royce , for a cheaper one, and preferred business class to first class on flights.

McCaughey was married with five children.
