David de Kretser

David Morritz de Kretser (born April 27, 1939 in Colombo , Sri Lanka ) is an Australian professor of medicine and former governor of the state of Victoria .

Life

De Kretser was born in Ceylon in 1939 . Since his father feared that the country would go downhill after Sri Lanka's independence, his family emigrated to Australia in 1949 and settled in Melbourne . After studying medicine at Melbourne University and Monash University , which he graduated with a doctorate in medicine in 1969, de Kretser embarked on a career in science. From 1969 to 1971 he was a Fellow of Endocrinology at the University of Washington in Seattle active. He specialized in research on infertility . From 1978 de Kretser was a professor at the medical faculty of Monash University, most recently as director of the Institute of Reproduction and Development . Today he is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science .

On April 7, 2006, de Kretser was appointed governor of Victoria and remained so until April 8, 2011.

De Kretser is married to his wife Jan and has four children.
