The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) is a non-governmental academy of science in Australia , located in Canberra at 15 Gordon Street (“Shine Dome”).
history
The AAS was founded in 1954 by members of the Royal Society . The first president was Sir Mark Oliphant . The academy was organized along the lines of the British Royal Society.
In Australia, the Australian Academy of the Humanities , the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering have also established themselves as science academies. The four academies have been cooperating in the “National Academies Forum” since 1995.
organization
The academy heads a council elected by the members, which conducts the official business. It is supervised by an "Executive Committee" under the Academy President. John Shine has held this office since May 2018 .
The Academy has (as of March 2019) around 550 full members, who are known as Fellows . Up to 20 new members can be accepted annually through "ordinary election" (and up to four additionally through "special election"). Furthermore, up to two "Corresponding Members" from overseas can be accepted.
