Kurt Lambeck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kurt Lambeck (born September 20, 1941 in Utrecht ) is a Dutch - Australian geophysicist . In addition to geophysics, his research areas include geodesy and geology , particularly with regard to medium and long-term changes in the shape of the earth and interactions between processes on the earth's surface and the solid earth.

Live and act

Lambeck was born in the Netherlands. Since 1956 he has been a citizen of Australia. He first studied at the University of New South Wales , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1963 , and in 1967 earned a Ph.D. for his thesis Precise geodetic position determination with the use of artificial satellites. at Oxford University . From 1967 to 1970 he worked in the field of geodesy at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and at Harvard University . From 1970 to 1977 he was scientific director of the Paris Observatory , from 1973 to 1977 he was also professor at the University of Paris VII and University of Paris VI . In France he helped to set up the geodesy program of the Center national d'études spatiales .

In 1976 Lambeck obtained a D.Sc. , also at Oxford University. In 1977 he received a professorship for geophysics at the Australian National University in Canberra , which he held until his retirement in 2007. From 1984 to 1993 and 1998 he was director of the Research School of Earth Sciences there . Lambeck was President of the Australian Academy of Science from 2006 to 2010 . In 2011/2012 he was Blaise Pascal Professor at the École normal supérieure in Paris.

Lambeck is one of the internationally recognized experts in the fields of variable earth rotation , the slow changes in the shape of the earth and the effects of ice melt on sea level . He has published over 250 scientific publications . Lambeck is one of the 250 most cited geoscientists (as of 2014). His findings revolutionized the concepts of geosciences and the modern understanding of the solid earth.

Lambeck's research areas were initially the satellite-based measurement of changes in the earth's gravitational field , the tidal range of the earth's crust and variations in the earth's rotation , the development of the earth-moon system ( two-body system ) and deformations of the earth's crust and mantle . More recent work has dealt with changes in sea level and changes in the viscosity of the earth's mantle during the last ice ages . From a paleoclimatological point of view, it is about the development of the ice thickness in the last ice age cycle. The third focus of the more recent work is on the significance of the changes in the sea level and the ice thickness for archeology and prehistoric research, especially with regard to possible migration movements of humans in the Paleolithic and Neolithic (see human expansion ).
