Royal Society of New South Wales
The Royal Society of New South Wales is an Australian learned society based in Sydney . It was founded on June 7, 1821 as the Philosophical Society of Australasia . It is the oldest learned society in Australia and one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere.
After a period of inactivity, it was renamed the Australian Philosophical Society on January 19, 1850 . The current name was set on December 12, 1866 by royal resolution.
Anyone interested in the study of science, art, literature and philosophy can join. The Society publishes the Journal and Proceedings of The Royal Society of New South Wales . Regular monthly meetings are held in Sydney and the branch of society is very active in the Southern Highlands. The Governor General of Australia and the Governor of New South Wales are patrons of the Society.
