Geological Society of London
The Geological Society of London is a UK-based scholarly society whose aim is to "study the mineral structure of the earth". It is the oldest geological society in the world with over 12,000 members ( Fellow of the Geological Society , abbreviated to FGS).
The society was founded in 1807 by 13 people, whose original goal was to meet once a month for a dinner to exchange geological information. Among the prominent founding members were William Babington , Humphry Davy , James Parkinson, and George Greenough . As early as 1825, this company received the Royal Charter from George IV and thus official recognition. In 1839 the society already had 750 members and since 1831 the society has presented an annual award for scientific achievements in the field of geology, the Wollaston Medal . It has also awarded the Murchison Medal since 1871, the Lyell Medal since 1876 , the Bigsby Medal since 1877 , the Prestwich Medal since 1903 and the Sue Tyler Friedman Medal since 1988 .
Since 1874 the Society has resided in Burlington House , Piccadilly, London . It is a member of the UK Science Council and is accredited as a Recognized Overseas Professional Organization .
