William John Hamilton

William John Hamilton (born July 5, 1805 in Wishaw , Lanarkshire , Scotland , † June 27, 1867 ) was a British geologist .

He was the son of the Scottish ancient scholar and diplomat William Richard Hamilton (1777-1859), who was the author of Aegyptiaca or description of the state of old and new Egypt: according to his own observations made in 1801 and 1802 .

William John Hamilton attended the Charterhouse School and studied in Göttingen . In 1831 he became a Fellow of the Geological Society of London .

In 1835 he undertook a geological journey with Hugh Edwin Strickland through the Levant and then alone through Armenia and Asia Minor.

He was the first to climb Mount Erciyes Dağı in Kayseri (Turkey).

From 1854 to 1866 he was President of the Geological Society of London.

In 1853, Hamilton was made an honorary member of the Nassau Society for Natural History .
