Thomas George Bonney FRS (born July 27, 1833 in Rugeley , Staffordshire , † December 10, 1923 in Cambridge ) was a British geologist .

Life

Bonney was the eldest son of Reverend Thomas Bonney, principal of the Rugeley Grammar School . He went to Uppingham School and St John's College, Cambridge , where he graduated 12th in the series in 1856, and was accepted into its faculty the next year.

From 1856 to 1861 he held a master's degree in mathematics at Westminster School , and only did geology for recreation, especially in the Alps . In 1868 he was appointed tutor to St John's College, University of Cambridge and lecturer in geology. He dealt mainly with igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Alps and various parts of England, such as from the Lizard complex in Cornwall , of Salcombe in District South Hams and the Charnwood Forest ; from Wales and the Scottish Highlands .

Between 1877 and 1901 he was Professor of Geology at University College London . He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on June 6, 1878 . He later held the position of secretary and finally president of the Geological Society (1884-1886), whose Wollaston Medal he received in 1889; he was also Secretary of the British Association (1881–1885) and President of the Mineralogical Society . Bonney was President of the Alpine Club from 1881 to 1883 and was made an Honorary Canon of Manchester in 1887 .

The Bonneysee ( Lake Bonney ) and the Bonney bar in East Antarctic Victoria Land and the Bonney Bowl , a mountain basin in East Antarctica Coatsland , are named after him.
